  • I'm looking for examples in film of friars who are portrayed in a good, positive and holy way.

I understand that many harmless friar characters in secular films might not be depicted as obviously participating in the sacramental life, but I'm wondering what footage has been used in showing religious brothers in roles beneficial to their communities and/or the world.

Too often, Friar Tuck is the standard... good-natured for the most part, but generally gluttonous.
This evil of heresy spreads itself. The doctrines of godliness are overturned; the rules of the Church are in confusion; the ambition of the unprincipled seizes upon places of authority; and the chief seat [the Papacy] is now openly proposed as a rewar

  • Diary of a Country Priest  by George Bernanos

I've never seen the film, but I did read the book.  The author also wrote the book, "Dialogues des Carmelites," which was used as a base for the libretto of the opera of the same name by Francis Poulenc.

Was there a film based on the book?  BTW, my suggestion had a priest, not a friar.  Sorry.

  • Best movie about friars I've ever seen is  Marcelleno  the 1950's version not the remake.

  • How about The Reluctant Saint with Maximilian Schell?  It's about Saint Joseph of Cupertino.

I second this recommendation! The Flowers of St. Francis is one of my favorite films.   :smirk:

Hands down the best, most edifying, and most orthodox representation of St. Francis and his friars that I've seen yet.

  • 1492, when Columbus went on a tirade and was slugged by a Friar (after the latter hade made the Sign of the Cross).

"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

I'll have to see Miracle of Marcelino. I've seen quite a few people recommend it.

I am pretty sure this was a joke.  If not, I agree with the down thumbs.
