  • The following is an example of the slanderous narrative we hear about Pope Pius XI:

“From contemporary historical records, we know that when fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia…Pius XI, in the hope that the invasion of the colonisers would create a suitable condition for a Catholic invasion, blessed and saw off the military expedition to Ethiopia to massacre the Christians of Ethiopia and prayed also for the success of the invading army.”

For decades, critics have defamed Pope Pius XI, claiming that he encouraged Mussolini’s invasion of Ethiopia. Indeed, the Lateran Pact of 1929 mandated that the pope maintain a position of neutrality.

However, as Abba Abraham Buruk Woldegaber, O. Cist., reveals in a book called Abyssinian Christianity: The First Christian Nation?, “neutrality” does not mean “indifference.” And while Fascist censorship and propaganda misrepresented Pius XI as an ally, he was actually no more than a victim of false information.

The pope’s name has been disgraced by relentless critics who have based their facts time and again on tainted sources. Resulting criticism has caused many Catholics to shy away from mentioning his name, yet this leader was a fearless champion of basic human rights.

  • Whenever we talk about the Fascists and the nαzιs in the context of the Catholic Church I think we should also include a discussion of Pius XI's encyclical, "Mit Brennender Sorge."
