Pope Paul VI instituted policies that were highly destructive to the Catholic Church. Dante's "The Divine Comedy: The Inferno" is a work of fiction but it does mention seven popes in Hell - specifically face down in the dirt, they are trying desperately to extinguish the fire on the bottom of their feet by kicking vociferously. One of the seven is actually still on Earth alive but his soul was pulled early to get to its final destination. Not trying to draw an analogy, but didn't Paul VI seem to be incoherent and always needing someone to prop him up in those last years? Also not trying to make comparisons with JPII who also became a near human blob his last years.
Maybe their souls were elsewhere?
It's at least probable that Paul VI was an anti-pope, but not yet declared as such. That's not our call at this moment nor will he be declared an anti-pope for several decades - by then, newchurch may have already canonized him but future generations will have to correct that.
Notwithstanding all of this, it's not our call to make on these men. Our call is to stand fast and remain faithful Roman Catholics.
In practice, despite all of our grave misgivings about these men, we should pray for the repose of their souls for the same reason that we should pray for those who persecute us. Our Master told us to.
