Different versions of this have been circulating all day. The following was published by French Catholic daily La Croix:
According to informations of the [religious news] agency I.Media, confirmed to La Croix by Fr. Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See Press Office, Benedict XVI has backtracked on his decision to proclaim Saint John Mary Vianney (1786-1859) "patron saint of all priests of the world", on the closing [ceremonies] of the Year of Priests.

This solemn proclamation should take place after the Mass celebrated this Friday on St.Peter's Square in the presence of over 10,000 priests from all over the world. The figure of this French mystic, already "patron saint of all parish priests of the world" since 1929 and "patron saint of the priests of France" since 1905, has not in the end been considered very representative of the priesthood at the 21st Century, and not very universal.

Other news sources have not mentioned any changes in the long-held plan of Pope Benedict XVI to proclaim the Curé d'Ars patron of all priests.

If the papal backtracking is confirmed, it will be a highly symbolic move.

  • Little could be further removed from the Novus Ordo priesthood than the writings of St. John Vianney.

I suppose that any priest who didn't molest altar boys, preach heresy from the pulpit, commit sacrileges during "Mass", and who actually believed in sin would indeed not be "very representative of the priesthood at the 21st Century."

  • The what does a 180?

He can't proclaim anyone anything anyway so I wouldn't worry about it.  That reminds me, though -- would those in SSPX and others, those who believe that the sedevacantist conclusion somehow transgresses by positing an invisible Church, like to tell me how the real Church can canonize fake saints?  The canonizations of the likes of Mother Theresa are inexplicable if this is the real Church.  I wonder why more people don't use this argument.  It's near-unassailable

The only objection that I am preparing to hear from Caminus is that "Canonizations aren't infallible..."  To keep Benedict as Pope, Caminus, do you notice that you have to keep chipping away at the Church, at its power and dignity?  Of course if CM were here saying that canonizations are fallible, and that that is why BoD heretics like St. Alphonsus were canonized, you would disagree vehemently.  So I wonder how you would explain the, er, "canonization" of Mother Theresa.

Who are the ones really indirectly insulting the Church here, is it really the sedes?  Is it worse to have a borderline invisible Church than to have a sham that is clinging to the cliff-edge by the tips of its fingers, and which is essentially deprived of grace?  Not that I believe it is clinging to the cliff-edge, mind you -- whatever it is that sits in Rome has fallen off the cliff, it's just that the body hasn't been discovered yet.
Readers: Please IGNORE all my postings here. I was a recent convert and fell into errors, even heresy for which hopefully my ignorance excuses. These include rejecting the "rhythm method," rejecting the idea of "implicit faith," and being brieflfy quasi-Jansenist. I also posted occasions of sins and links to occasions of sin, not understanding the concept much at the time, so do not follow my links.

  •   Forget the recognized "saints". God bless the saints the Church can't stand.

We have had an overabundance of ass kissing "saints" that got us in the predicament we are in now.

  • Rorate reports that he did indeed do an about face.   I'm sure, however, that many will rush to his defense with the same worn out and wearisome excuse "Oh!  The Holy Father wanted to do it, but he's surrounded by enemies and bad advisors."

    Mother Theresa was never canonized.

  • Alexandria,

    Most nauseating were those who

1.) Didn't understand why this is a big deal (either clueless or else deliberate liberal trolls).

2.) Suggested that it's not the Pope's fault and his "evil" advisors did it. The old Neo-Cath excuse used for every single bad decision by JPII.

  • Stevus, quite right.

I read that he had three cardinals with him up there - Sodano, Bertone and I forget the other one's name right now.  But he was of the same ilk as the other two.  To me, that said it all.

    =================================

To continue my point, Gerald Celente hammered his point on last night's Rense.com interview, that the brown nosing, butt kissing class president wanna bees in high school (who often are born with a silver spoon in their mouth) are now the ones in all the high positions of power, both financial and in government.

They lack integrity, concern for anyone but themselves, have no God given problem solving skills , except to use for their own benifit.

I think Celente is on to something. Didn't mean to offend, but the same phenomena also plays out in the in history of the Catholic Church. Witness that in the 20th century - any body who stands up for truth gets cut down while antiChrist brown nosers are appointed pope.

    Here is the interview :
