What kind of lunacy is this?

Despite all the stupid and indeed immoral stuff to come out of the present US administration, I have a hard time in principle considering this to be one of them.

None of us would deny that the truly repentant deserve a second chance (or conceivably a 3rd chance, if it might come to that, I suppose).

The proposal isn't for all convicted criminals to have everything sealed up so that no one knows if a convicted rapist (whether deeply remorseful and rehabilitated or not) is living next door...it's that for those who are viewed as no longer posing a risk, be allowed to live again in the wider community with the bare minimum of restriction, which might include having labels attached to them which makes living as an honest law-abiding citizen very much more difficult

Placing restrictions on former offenders is theoretically sensible, sure, but also tends to get applied rather too broadly. Among other reasons eg of actual recalcitrance, one major factor in recidivism rates is that would-be former criminals are utterly unable to do anything else, locked out of potential housing, employment, etc (never mind that for many, imprisonment in the first place has the effect of turning petty one time criminals into better, and often more dangerous ones).

I don't think this is among all the other egregious examples of PC 'gone mad' - it's trying to get society to treat the genuinely remorseful with a little more compassion. The alternatives don't seem to work, so if nothing else it's worth a try...
