  • Who came up with this? And how do you get multiple plenary indulgences at once? Eight at once? Each one resets your slate completely to zero, so how does this happen eight times simultaneously?

In any case, that whole site is absurd.

Well, you could in theory get more than one the same day (it's true on All Souls Day) and they can, by God's Mercy, be applied to souls in Purgatory.  With 14 million years too, people should have some extra they can offer for souls in Purgatory.  But I'm OK with more than 1 per day.  I'm not sure it's 8 at the same time, but 8 on Friday.

Hmm, I seem to recall there is a general rule against receiving a plenary indulgence more than once a day.

But my main point was that I would think the indulgence is applied to a person's soul when he completes the indulgenced prayer or work, no? So this would mean that when you finish the prayer you get eight plenary indulgences applied to your soul at the same time. That's the problem here, I think.

Yeah, that's the general rule, but All Souls Day was one example of an exception.  Pope could do whatever he wanted, i.e. allow 50 per day, but it does seem contrary to traditional practice to grant more than 1 per day.

I don't think that it was necessarily 8 times simultaneously.  I read it as 8 times per day, where you had to say the prayers 8 times.  But it could be simultaneous.  Recall also that a Plenary isn't always plenary as applied to a given individual, since if one doesn't have freedom of attachment to sin, it would become partial.  In addition, the "extra" ones could be applied to souls in Purgatory.

I'm more taken aback by the 14 million years "partial" ... though the 8 per day would also be rather unusual.

No problem at all...you can earn many but only keep one.

According to Holy Mother Church, and the Raccolta, you have always, only been able to receive One Plenary Indulgence per day...FOR YOURSELF...except on the day of your death when you could get the second during Extreme Unction (or if you made the Articulo Mortis prayer sometime during your life after Communion)However,  you can gain many Plenary Indulgences (totis quotis) per day, whenever you perform the required devotion, keeping one for yourself and the rest are only applicable to the Souls in Purgatory.  The Stations of the Cross is such a devotion and is therefore the highest devotion in the Church.
To read about the indulgences, look at the post Chaplet of the Way of the Cross in this thread
