  • In another forum, a mother asked about her objection to her husband wanting their elementary school son to take up playing football. All the men said it was OK to play organized tackle football.

I grew up playing organized tackle football from the youth leagues through High School. I could have played in a small college but I knew I'd never play in the NFL, so I went into studying for a profession. I think playing made me a leader and a better man. However, I was not a practicing Catholic at the time. Looking back today at it, if I were to do it all over again, there is only one thing I would have had to change when I went into high school, and that is the naked showering of the players. We would all, including the coaches bathe and walk around naked in the locker room. The showers were just one big open space. I did not think anything of it at the time, but now I see it as wrong. That is the part that Catholic parents have to teach their children to "work around". I remember we had one player, a 320 lb defensive lineman, who was black, and more civilized than all of us. He was a gentleman, and a transfer from a Catholic school. He would not undress past his underwear and never showered. He would change his clothes and leave after practice, never showering. I now understand why he did that.

Fathers, if your children want to take up football, think about what I just said.

I'd be curious to know what they do in the SSPX schools that play high school football. Anyone know?

  • That's an interesting question.  Could you please articulate your concern about boys showering together?

I showered with other boys in an open area when I was in High School.  I was at first embarrassed by it, but then got used to it.  I don't know that I would consider it sinful.  I would imagine that you'd consider it as an erosion of a sense of modesty, but I don't sense that this has any impact on my sense of modesty in the presence of girls of ladies.

I did not think anything of it at that time when I did it, but I also did not see anything wrong at that time with bedding every girl I could get my hands on. I now do not see it as appropriate. We had coaches from 30 to 65 years old walking around naked too. At the very least, there should be separate shower facilities with shower curtains and the athletes should wear towels when they walk around. I never thought nor do I think of the ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ element, for there was none, but just that it is inappropriate and I would not like my son to do the same as I did, now that I know better.

  • The practice does seem very pagan and/or utilitarian.  It shows a lack of culture and self-respect because one has to be “macho” and walk around naked or appear to be weak if you have some aversion to vanity or some level of modesty.  It’s just unnecessary really.
