  • I know in the East, bugs are eaten more often.  Alot of Westerners go "eww!" but I'm a little more open when it comes to foods.

Filipino foods seem interesting to me.  I was wondering if there were any favorites of yours you'd recommend that the typical Westerner wouldn't like?

  • Well, there's one particularly "eww" food that a lot of Filipinos eat (that I don't), which is called "balut."  Just do a google search for it.

For a more mild Filipino favourite, you could check out something called "lechon."  It may not be all that strange to some Westerners, but it may sure freak out all of your vegan buddies.  =P  Basically, you just roast a while pig!  If you can find a Filipino catering service to help you out with a party, some of them will roast the whole pig (or several of them if you have the cash and the need) right there in your yard!

    Any ideas, Katoliko?

  • mmm... balut :)

i'd have to say dinuguan, most people wouldn't touch it, unless you tell them its "chocolate soup."  It's made with blood, usually pig's, and has pig ears and belly, sometimes if you're lucky it will have regular cubes of pork.

another favorite would be bituka ng manok (chicken intestines).  the intestines are skewered, then grilled.  It has a very distinct taste and smell.

  • Yes, I remember balut.  Remember the talk we had at fisheaters about balut and other Eastern dishes that disgusted foreigners?

I think one of the mods told us to stop being nasty, and that she'd feed us a warm meal if we visited.  Then pinoy said she was insulting his culture. :light-saber:
    :laugh2: :laugh2:

    Anyways...

Any spots in Chicago where I can get some Filipino food?  Or in Indianapolis?
