Title: Picture of your pet - pets
Post by: Matthew on July 02, 2013, 02:45:47 PM
Since the "picture of yourself" thread is at risk of being derailed by this, I decided to start a new topic now while I still had the chance.

My pets have elements of the emoticons above.
They're at the sitters so I can't post a picture of them.

Good Idea, after all they say some pets look like their owner,
I have two goldfish that are about 10 years old now, no kidding.

A black cat, that just moved into my home after being tossed out, and I saw the person turn out three kittens, and this one made her way to my home after a spell.

I also have one large dog.

Must see if I have any pictures of them.  They won't be together because my cat and dog stay away from each other, and my cat always is trying to get my goldfish.

I will not be posting all of my sheep, just a handful of pictures.

Bonaventure is in the first couple!

The third is of my badgerface Finn ram lamb near the lambing supplies box.

The fourth is my Cotswold ewe with her twin daughters that are in my avatar.  It was an incredibly cold night, hence the little sweater.

See if you can find the Pygmy kid in the fifth photo!  That's of some of my babies from 2011.

The sixth is of my brown Finn ram Eero.  He is stunning and it's so hard to find them in that color!

The first image is what I meant in the other thread about his pompadour skunkstripe.  He looks like a a greaser from the 50s America or a rocker from 60s Britain.

:laugh1:  He has the sweetest personality though!  He'll actually come and lie down beside me when I'm in the pasture.  I've never had a sheep do that before!

Hi ShepherdofSheep,

I like your sheep!
Years ago we had a pair of pygmy goats. I'll never forget the day the doe had her kid. My family and I were so excited!

1) Twister & Squeaky - both female cats. They are both sisters and were born during a tornado outbreak 2 years ago (I was not in it), hence, the name "Twister". Squeaky got her name due to her meows sounding like little squeaks when she was a little kitten.  Now, her meows still sound a little like squeaks, but on occasion, they also sound like a crow's "croa" or "caw", depending on her mood.

2) Twister
3) Squeaky

I like dogs a lot, too, but I currently don't have any...

Those are some fine looking sheep! You can truly see God made them!

It's great to see two cats getting along! I know a lot of trouble stories where people introduce two cats to each other and are too silly to realize it will never, ever, ever work out.

Oh, I love beardies!  I've always wanted one, but, well...it's rather difficult to justify yet another little piece of nature here.

I don't have any pictures of my own, but I'll post one of what my brown anoles and fire-bellied toads looked like.

Brown anole (Anolis sagrei) male thrusting out his dewlap in either a display of courtship or territoriality.

Oriental fire-bellied toad (Bombina orientalis)- semi-aquatic and a great introduction to herpetology for neophytes!

I've also had Caribbean land hermit crabs (Coenobita Clypeatus), but I think most people have an idea of what those look like!

my wolfdog Caligo

We were relaxing at Santa Monica's beach when small group of children started playing in the sand near us.   They were making a sand castle, laughing and playing.  Caligo simply loves to play with children, and all the action so close to us was really getting her all wound up.  She kept scratching the sand and looking at me, so I clicked a picture and gave her the go-ahead to play with them.  She immediately jumps into the middle of the hole they were digging and starts helping out (digging like the pro digger she is).  Everyone went wild, laughing and screaming, sand flying everywhere... They all played in the sand for a while, then everyone ran to the surf, including Caligo. It was a really fun day!

Thank you so much!  I do so enjoy their company.
The horse was a rescue from BLM at 5 months old; She is two and a half now.
The goats were also adopted; The female was orphaned, on formula, and seriously dehydrated when I rescued her (so I found a local herd from which I acquired milk every morning to improve her health).  The male had his horns improperly banded and rejected by the previous owner at 8 months old.  The pair proved themselves this past December with their first kid.  I also keep a flock of chickens (adopted rooster and eight hens), and annually raise pigs (Poland China and Hampshire).  I had a pair of Dorper sheep, and their first offspring, but found them a good herd to join so they have moved on (I can't say I really mind though, they sure did eat a lot, and they can be loud too).

Your buck is quite handsome and I love the richness of the phaeomelanin he expresses, especially on his face!  If it's anything like how sheep inherit that pigment, it should be expressed quite readily in the offspring.

Were your Dorpers white or the black-headed variety?

We have a dog, two cats and sort of a horse (10 year old Appie given to dd but we haven't taken possession and don't know if we will be able to swing it) but no pictures uploaded.

For the chicken people. We have Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers and one Australorp.

The chick pictured eating clover is a Buff Orpington named Violet. She was about 9 weeks in the picture give or take. They are 22 weeks now and laying.

Your chicken run looks almost exactly like ours.  I was going to ask about pullet above- I thought she looked like a Buff.

Here's a Silkie of ours... (quite youthful)

...and our 10h gray gelding Casper.  The chick is present because my little sister went on a chick photography spree resulting in dozens of snapshots of chicks in every location she could find.

I love silkies, they are so cute and friendly. I would get some except they really aren't heat hardy and I need breeds that at least having a passing chance of surviving a summer here. I can't run fans or misters to my coop. All they have is shade. The Buff Orpingtons are a risk. They often don't make it more than one summer but they are such a nice breed I'm giving it a go.
that isn't our run, that was our brooder. It was moveable and that day it was out in the yard to let them scratch around. Our chicks hatched first week in February so spent their first 6 weeks indoors. Our coop is 4wx8lx4h with an attached run that is 12lx8wx6h. The girls free range our acre most of the day.

I can't find any pictures of Cinnamon to save my life but I'll leave you with this sweet pic taken down the street from our home. They had just stopped at the gas station for drinks. (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y11/kmomto6/photobucket-4783-1372881089751_zps96fc8b68.jpg)

Don't even remind me...we had to feed our entire winter supply and purchase more for winter at outrageous prices.  It was very difficult to find too.  Deo gratias, we've had plentiful precipitation this year and an abundance of that dried grass/legume stuff and pasture that they love so well!

I enjoy the fact they are all looking at the camera, and indeed thinking to themselves "Ok look reallllll cute and he might give us hay"

But the sheep would reply "Nahhhhhhh. We'll just end up on that Tradlist he belongs to. THEN we can ask him for apples!"

Thanks. Twister is very interactive, vocal and rambunctious at times. Sometimes I wonder if her frontal lobes are underdeveloped or damaged.  :laugh1:  She also wants to eat a lot, but I disciple her feeding routine so she does not get overweight.  She is real sensitive to external noise, therefore, she's kind of a good "security" cat because she gets alarmed when she hears noises outside. She'll even "growl" a little, or her satellite ears go into overdrive.

Squeaky is quite the recon specialist. She's somewhat shy, and plays the "innocent" one until it's time for bed and lights are out. Then she goes on missions such as hopping up on counters and desks to check out food or anything else she might find interesting. She also seems to feel more brave in the dark. Whenever I open the back door to the patio at night, she sometimes darts right out the door, but during the day, she shows a little bit of interest, yet shies away from it.  They are both good for going after little bugs that might enter the house. They both love to play, too.

The first one is a picture of one of our livestock guardian dogs. His name is August, but I call him Auggie. He's a mix between an Anatolian Shepherd and Great Pyranees. The friendliest dog ever, but intimidating to predators and strangers.

The second picture is of our jersey heifer, April. She'll be our new milk cow. My mom is struggling with her... trying to get her halter broke.

Yah, I think some can be feisty. Anatolians aren't nearly as docile as Pyranees, which is why we bred the two. It made for a great dog. Watching a LGD work is something else. Ours are so loyal to their livestock. We haven't lost a single goat to a coyote since getting them. Also, we stopped losing chickens to hawks. August will keep one eye on the sky, and one on the goats. When he sees a hawk he'll jump up and do a certain kind of bark, alerting the chickens to take cover.  It's so cool to watch. The chicken will flee, then he'll chase the hawk until it's out of sight.

Oh, were you talking about the Jersey? Yeah, they sure are feisty. April's mom, Hellen, if she doesn't know you, won't let you touch her udder. I've been kicked, thrown up against the wall by the swoop of her neck, butted, etc. Her and I finally came to terms, but gosh it was frustrating. She's docile towards me now.

Wow -- I'm impressed by how many CathInfo members have gone "back to the land" and are raising livestock.

We have land, too, but we're not using it much yet. Our kids are mostly too young to help.

 :cowboy:

We just have a small orchard of young trees right now. I've done gardening and chickens -- and hope to return to both, just for starters.

Considering our German backgrounds, I'm also going to get into Hugelkultur. The nation that gave the world jet engines, rockets, and the atomic bomb has also come up with a permaculture technique that provides plenty of water and nutrients to a garden bed (or any plant, really) without watering or fertilizing -- and the hugelkultur bed is good for 4-6 years. All you need to build one is wood, compost, and a shovel.

Lionheads only have wool on their manes and sometimes have a ruffle on the bottom when they are grown, so typically are not used for spinning.  But we also have French Angoras and their wool is quite excellent for spinning.  I often blend it with my Finn wool.

We got 2 gallons from her for awhile. That seems like quite a bit, but a dairy goat with excellent genes can produce even more. Before we had our nubians, my mom had an alpine that produced large amounts of milk. We'd take a gallon off her a day easily even while she was nursing an orphaned calf.

I like the milk from nubians better, but in my experience (though it's limited) alpines will give a more generous amount in general.

My family lived down the road from a goat dairy when I was in my teens. I learned that I don't mind goat milk at all as long as I don't have to drink it.

I also raised goats for a while for 4-H.

My only pets now are dust bunnies.
