  • This came from a post from another forum and has much truth to it.

Nothing will save the car industry but when they go broke a lot of people will be hurt.

When America was rich they invented employer paid pensions. It seemed a good idea at the time.

I knew a man who put in 30 years working for a Michigan county. He started at age 20, retired at 50 and collected a pension until his death at 95. Not bad. Work 30 years and collect a pension for another 45 years!

I have known guys who joined the military at 18, put in their 20 years and retired at 38. Then they get a government job (with veterans preference) work another 20 years and retire again at age 58 with two pensions. Ahh for the good old days.

Auto workers, soldiers, policemen, postmen and garbage collectors all got a pension after 20 or 30 years on the job.

The trouble is the private companies can't afford it now. Cities, counties, states and even the federal government can't afford it.

    So now what?
