The history of Christendom is filled with countless examples of the secular arm carrying out executions.

Indeed it is. It's even fuller of examples of the secular arm, while claiming to act in Christ's name, making a mockery of both the Christian faith and the plain example set by Our Lord during His time on earth.

Of course, you don't really give a hoot about the imitation of Christ, do you? Your comments have been trollishly larded with evasions and smart-ass, context-free references to dubious conduct by one individual or another. In short, the historical figure you call to mind is less Justinian—himself quite an uncertain trumpet!—than Sabbatai Zevi.

I am glad most writers here are not advocating severe punishments for adulterers. God makes bad things work together for the good. Adultery is devastating. But maybe the weak and shallow one needs the prayers of the offended one, and maybe that is a big part of the personal calling of the offended one - to pray for the one that offended him/her.  Perhaps no one else would have spent their life praying for the salvation of that soul. In the eternal picture, the salvation of that soul is actually more important than the offense suffered.

It seems impossible when one is so deeply wounded to advocate for the offender, but with God all things are possible. He always gives the grace needed to do His will, and in instances like this, where much grace is needed, much grace is given.

These are not innocent people we are discussing. They have made a choice to commit a disgusting crime against the Lord and holy purity. Adulterers and adulteresses deserve death. The only disagreements should be about procedural matters around the credibility of witnesses and other evidence.

Why is it controversial to assert an argument from the judicial laws of the Old Testament for a transgression that God in His infinite wisdom decreed was worthy of capital punishment?

And it would just cause people to travel elsewhere if they wanted to commit adultery, to avoid being caught in their home country. If it were your native NZ, then they would just fly to Fiji, Australia, Bali, etc. and do it.

So, speaking as someone who has witnessed the sin. The spouse did not want the other dead. They wanted to work things out.
The spouse who was cheated on should have somewhat of a say....
