Maybe my hand was smaller but it seems to me that candy bars have gotten smaller over the years...
...does anyone else feel this way?
We shrink with age, so everything should be perceived as getting bigger.
It's a marketing ploy, to play with your perception. They keep the price the same
for candy bars for a year or two, but gradually make the size smaller in increments.
Then, when sales start to drop off, they increase the size back to the original, and
increase the price at the same time, so it seems like the price increase is justified.
You're getting more, for more money, so you're getting more for your money.
Get it?
The size question isn't clear to many shoppers because there have been so many
changes over the years, and the changes you notice over the years are usually
the ones when the sizes are increased, because they make a big advertizing
campaign over it. You don't notice when the sizes get smaller in steps, because
there is nothing announcing the change. I've seen two cartons on the shelf at
the same time, when the stock clerks did not follow the supplier's instructions to
remove all the older, larger sized bars first, before putting out the newer, smaller
sized bars. And the two different sizes of bars are visible at the same time, the
older size at 3-1/4 oz. and the new one at 2-7/8 oz., for example, same price.
They do it with chips, sunflower seeds, ice cream bars, etc.
