  • I just had a thought this morning: For all the protestations of "evangelicals" and other protties regarding graven images, does anyone else find it odd that some of them have no problem displaying nativity sets during Christmas? After all, that little piece of porcelain or alabaster shaped into an infant represents God incarnate. I just find it odd.
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

  • They would say we "worship" our creches.

I tried to tell a friend today (newCatholic!) that maybe they shouldn't set out the baby Jesus quite yet. Or have the wiseman at the manger yet. They had no idea why not.

I don't know, maybe that's just not done anymore, but I thought you didn't put the baby out until Christmas Eve, and then you start moving the wise men to the general area by Epiphany. My kids love that part (moving the wise men).

The symbolism of many things is lost on Protestants.  I had one object to my crucifix because "Jesus isn't on the cross anymore!"

Charlemagne, you come dangerously close to my old thread where I disagreed with the adoration / worship to the infant Jesus of prague.
But my reasons were the same. That devotion still does not appeal to me, but I can tell you that the making of Catholic statues of holy persons was decided upon by a church council as being approved, after heretics said it was wrong to make statues of saints and of Jesus.

  • Yay! I finally have something to say next time Protestant extended family members say something about supposed Catholic idolatry! (I already explained it to them, but of course it did no good.) Can't wait to go holiday visiting now! Think I'll gift them all with new nativity sets and accept their thanks before I spring it on 'em. What do you say?

But they'd have no problem with a hexagram. They're special!
