  • This is a silly question, but does it matter which "version" we use?

The Protestants and Orthodox use the one version, while the Catholics use another.

They both have the same text, of course, but the method of diving the first one into two while combining the last two makes it easier for my brain.

  • I was just thinking about this, because one of my brothers is studying for his first Holy Communion (in the Novus Ordo church unfortunately) and I saw this paper listing the Ten Commandments.

    The Ten Commandments are:

    1. I AM THE LORD, THY GOD; THOU SHALT NOT HAVE STRANGE GODS BEFORE ME.
    2. THOU SHALT NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD, THY GOD, IN VAIN.
    3. REMEMBER TO KEEP HOLY THE LORD'S DAY.
    4. HONOR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER.
    5. THOU SHALT NOT KILL.
    6. THOU SHALT NOT STEAL.
    7. THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.
    8. THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAISNT THY NEIGHBOR.
    9. THOU SHALT NOT COVET THY NEIGHBOR'S WIFE.
    10. THOU SHALT NOT COVET THY NEIGHBOR'S GOODS.

    -----------

Protestants divide up the First Commandment in order to say that Catholics break the "2nd Commandment" by making statues, et cetera. So in order to keep the number at 10, they combine the 9th and 10th commandments.

We aren't Orthodox Jєωs, we don't put our wives at the level of our goods.  :smirk:

  • The Orthodox Church/Protestant method seems to be the way Jesus used.

It is evident when the rich young man asks what he must do to inherit life, and Jesus tells him the commandments.

He uses the version with the 9th and 10th combined.

(Jesus only speaks of the commandments which deal with people, and he only names 6, not 7.)
