  • Panorama [magazine] said the recorded Vatican phone calls were catalogued by the NSA in four categories - leadership intentions, threats to the financial system, foreign policy objectives and human rights.

Benedict resigned on February 28 this year and his successor, Pope Francis, was elected on March 13.

"It is feared" that calls were listened to up until the start of the conclave that elected Francis, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, Panorama said.

The magazine said there was also a suspicion that the Rome residence where some cardinals lived before the conclave, including the future pope, was monitored.

  • Yes, the Vatican is full of hanky-panky to put it lightly.  I do believe they have a porn paper, and the Vatican Bank has been closed and well, it's like "WindSwept House".

  • An Italian magazine has reported that the US National Security Agency (NSA) monitored the phone conversations of Vatican officials. But the director of the Vatican press office has told reporters that “we have nothing to worry about.”

“There are no concerns on this matter,” said Father Federico Lombardi, in a statement released to reporters after the magazine Panorama reported that the NSA had eavesdropped on conversations at the Vatican. The magazine claimed that the NSA monitoring included the conversations of cardinals who gathered in Rome in March for the conclave that elected Pope Francis.

  • Its obvious why they were spying on the Vatican and the pope everyone knows it wasn't for personal entertainment. They want to control things. They want to find something to blackmail people they want to manipulate the Church to their own benefit and yes the American government is at odds with traditional Catholicism. I would seriously consider it highly likely that they in some way or another blackmailed Pope Benedict to resign and that Berglogio is one of their own. Even editors who don't usually come off this way are considering this a highly likely possibility. I'm surprised off all places this isn't being talked about here. Wow.
We conclude logically that religion can give an efficacious and truly realistic answer to the great modern problems only if it is a religion that is profoundly lived, not simply a superficial and cheap religion made up of some vocal prayers and some ceremonies...

  • Contrary to a widely circulated report, the US National Security Agency (NSA) could not have eavesdropped on the conclave that elected Pope Francis, a veteran Vatican journalist has reported.

Andrea Tornielli of La Stampa writes that the Vatican had deployed sophisticated anti-bugging technology in the Sistine Chapel and throughout the apostolic palace in the days leading up to the conclave. The anti-bugging measures were already in place during the general congregations at which cardinals exchanged ideas prior to the opening of the conclave. Reporters who were in the building testified that internet connections were interrupted and cell-phone signals lost when the system was activated.

Vatican security experts take pride in their ability to foil espionage, Tornielli reports. They note, too, that although the hackers’ collective known as “Anonymous” made a concerted attack on the Vatican internet site, they were not able to gain access to the site— although Anonymous has successfully hacked into the sites of many government agencies and multinational corporations.

The Vatican’s anti-bugging measures would not have prevented NSA eavesdropping on the conversations held by prelates outside the apostolic palace, in the days leading up to the conclave. But the NSA insists that the Vatican was not a target, and Vatican officials profess to be unconcerned by the reports of eavesdropping.
