1. The "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" should be given to the POSTING ITSELF (what you think of the author posting a given item), not the content of the post itself.
So if someone helpfully posts a good article about how the USA is going downhill -- you don't want to give it a "thumbs-down" because that will penalize the member who posted it.
In general, the feature is there to encourage good, thoughtful, quality posts by the membership.
2. Please be fair. Just because you're arguing with someone doesn't mean you need to downrate every post he/she has made. I'm going to put in some programming soon to fix this loophole -- but for now, please be fair and honest. "Like" the posts you like, and "Dislike" the posts you truly have a problem with.
3. Please give credit to good posts, even if they come from one of your "enemies". It's only fair. Don't you want to encourage him/her to post similar topics that don't make you upset? The identity of your Likes and Dislikes is always confidential -- so they'll never know their worst enemy just gave them a Like :)
It is rare that a given member NEVER posts anything good. If you never like ANY of a given person's posts, you should at least be suspicious, and ask yourself, "Does this person NEVER have anything good to contribute?"
We should all make sure to be on our guard against the vice of hatred. When you find yourself "disliking" even neutral posts by a given person, you should make sure that you don't in fact hate that person. If so, that is something that needs to be dealt with (in Confession -- and I mean before you go to Communion again!). Charity and hatred can't co-exist in your soul. You either have the love of God (Sanctifying Grace) or you don't.
If a person can do no good, that is a sign of hatred.
Human beings are a combination of good and evil. Only the devil is pure evil.
Even a dictator has some good points. Maybe he adheres to the natural law, or he opposes the nєω ωσrℓ∂ σr∂єr. You get the idea.

#1 is confusing and #3 is presuming motivations that don't always exist
...and for that you get my thumbs down.
