Not being surprised by ones sins

    • The book The Spiritual Combat says something to the effect that the true Christian is not surprised or shocked when he sins, because he knows he is weak and miserable etc.

    But i think i had read the same thing somewhere else before The Spiritual Combat, maybe in Saint Teresa of Avila's books, but for the life of me I cant remember where it was.

    Has anyone read this in a famous book other than the Spiritual Combat?

    This is a common teaching of all the saints and holy writers...

    I have read it so many times that I know it is a true fact, but don't remember any of the sources.

    Almost any treatise on humility will probably have it.

    Maybe the Imitation of Christ, Father Faber's book, Growth in Holiness, or Saint Francis de Sales, Introduction to the Devout Life?

    St Jerome had an encounter w/ Jesus wherein he told Jesus he freely gives him everything

    But Jesus said he was holding back one thing--his sins. I feel the best way to give Jesus one's sins is to spend time w/ Him in the Real Presence. That is where the brutal truth is
