A nine-year-old girl in Mexico has given birth.

Hospital authorities in the state of Jalisco confirmed the girl gave birth to a baby boy less than two weeks ago.

The boy weighed 5.5 pounds.

Doctors said both the mother and child are in good health.

They are in the care of the girl's grandmother, but hospital staff say because of her age, the girl will need to have extensive follow-up visits.

Local media report the alleged father, a 17-year-old, fled the area after the baby was born.

The state's attorney general's office is investigating whether the case should be legally considered child sex abuse or rape.

I read that the young girl said to the authorities that there was no abuse or rape, that she loved this 17 yr old. We shall see.

Love or not (and how on earth would a 9 year old really know, anyway), I hope this boy meets a just punishment. He's young himself, so I wonder if that will soften his punishment.

Well, if the girl consented...

She could have been under a lot of pressure to say that she consented, if that's really what she did.

In the states, sex with a minor would fall under statutory rape, but he is a minor himself (if legal age is the same there is here). I'm curious to see how they will handle this.

The blame lies on her parents or whoever her guardian is. 9 years old is way too young to date or "fall in love" with someone.

A nine year old cannot really consent to sex with a seventeen year old. She may have been compliant, but that is all. The boy is a sex offender, and should be treated as such. I have no problem with his age being considered, but he should suffer a just punishment.

I completely agree she is not capable of consent. I hope that the boy is prosecuted as such. I was just pointing out what the legal system might say. Poor girl.

I think it's necessary to make some distinctions here.

The reason it was evil to abuse this child has nothing to do with the child's level of understanding of what she was doing and her willingness to do it. Certainly, using the term "consent" for what it means in the dictionary (not legally), it is possible for someone past the age of reason with knowledge of what sex is to decide whether to do something or not. It's not a matter of consent. It's a crime because it is perverted abuse of an innocent child who is neither physically mature enough nor at an age capable of taking responsiblity for motherhood.

I do agree, by our understandings, this would be against the laws. If Planned Parenthood gets ahold of this, and they will, they will push for "in was consented". Planned Parenthood desires that all such crimes be no crimes any more. Planned Parenthood, states that their definition of giving out birth control is age 10. That was 25 years ago.

Which is -- pardon the pun -- in-CONCEIVE-able to me.

My oldest daughter is 5 1/2. In just 3 short years, she'll be as old as this Mexican girl was when she conceived.

I suppose it's a testament to the modern world's ability to sɛҳuąƖize childhood. Have you seen how pre-teens dress in "the world"?
