PRESERVATION  ADVOCATES  ASK  VOLUNTEERS  TO  HELP RESTORE
DILAPIDATED  WINDOW  FRAMES  FOR  MOUNT  ST.  MICHAEL’S  CENTENNIAL
Glass from the past ~ Mike Prager mikep@spokesman.com
There are 138 wood-framed windows in the west wing of Mount St. Michael, a former Jesuit scholasticate on a hill overlooking north Spokane.
    They need repainting.
The congregation based in the sprawling compound  wants to restore the historic building in preparation for a centennial in 2015.
Members of Spokane Preservation Advocates have offered to help during a “doing it” event on July 17 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are being sought.  Lunch will be served.
Those who turn out will get a chance to see the inside of one of the Spokane area’s most curious landmarks, which overlooks Hillyard from atop a prominent foothill north of Bigelow Gulch Road.
Completed in 1917, Mount St. Michael was home to Roman Catholic priest trainees from the Jesuit order until 1968, when the Jesuits consolidated their operation at Gonzaga University.
The building was acquired in 1977 by a breakaway Catholic organization, the Tridentine Latin Rite Church, which rejected Vatican II doctrinal changes in 1965 that allowed English-language Mass among other reforms.
Formally called the Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen, the church group operates the Late Gothic Revival facility for childhood education, a convent and a traditional Catholic parish with about 600 members.
Women must wear modest dresses and cover their heads, and men are required to wear coats and ties during church services in the building’s ornate chapel.
“It’s like walking into the turn of the century,” said Gary Lauerman of the preservation advocates group.  “Nothing has changed.”
On the upper floor, longtime parishioner Alvina Urban, 90, has been spending her days working on the window restorations.
She uses a heat gun to strip old paint from the windows, which were removed by volunteer John Netzel, another parishioner, so they could be repainted safely indoors.
Down the hall, parishioner Rosie Cyr balances herself in a window casing in a building in which she, her husband and their seven children have spent much of their lives.
“I have a vested interest in this,” Cyr said.
The property was acquired in 1881 by the Rev. Joseph Cataldo and operated initially as a farm, supplying Gonzaga with fresh produce and dairy products.
The cornerstone of the building designed by renowned Spokane architect Julius Zittel was laid in 1915; the building was completed in 1917.  It was built in the vicinity of the 1866 Mount St. Michael Mission, a Roman Catholic outreach to Spokane Indians.
The complex is listed on the local, state and national historic registers.
The church was the subject of controversy in 1984 when its leader, the late Bishop Francis Schuckardt, was accused of mismanagement and being sɛҳuąƖly involved with assistants and forced out of the church.
Since then, the church has operated quietly and may be best known for its Singing Nuns musical group and the blue habits of the convent sisters.
The west wing, where the window work is under way, was completed in 1929.
“On the whole, it looks like the building is in really good shape.  The windows need some love,” Laueraman said.

    Please pray for my soul.

They don't enforce that very much, do they?  I have been meaning to get myself a suit but haven't done it yet.

July 17 is my birthday, by the way.  Think of me while you are painting windows :).  Try to make it a happy thought.

Maybe it's like walking into the turn of the century to Gary from the world he lives in, but it isn't to me (with Rosie balancing herself in a window casing?).

Thanks for the article, Myrna.  That Mrs. Urban is one faithful soul.  Good for her!  90 years old and still going strong.  Must be all those decades of daily Mass and Holy Communion.

  • Men wearing coats and ties, well some do, in fact many do, but the some that don't do not get kicked out, like some churches, that is what I love about the Mount.  Some men come straight to church from work, others have their excuses, I don't know, God knows.

I know that is what many do not love about the Mount.
    Please pray for my soul.

What, that not everyone wears ties and CMRI are easy on them?  I think there is only one person on Earth bothered by that -- Thomas Droleskey.

Down here a lot of the parishioners don't even bother to tuck in their shirts.  That gets on my nerves.  I can understand not wanting to wear a suit and a tie, but how much effort does it take to tuck in your dang shirt.  ( I accidentally typed "tuck to tuck" and then "tuke to tuck," ha ha ).

I haven't gotten a suit yet but I plan to.  I must admit, I HATE suits and ties.  But I see it as a good penance and a way to show that I have left behind my artsy-fartsy past, so I intend to get myself a bean-counting bureaucrat penguin suit eventually.

P.S. Alexandria, are you in Washington?  Do you go to THE Mount, the Mount of legend?  Do you know Myrna?

Formerly called?  I thought Mount Saint Michael was CMRI, which, of course, translates as Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen.

    Has something changed?

  • TKGS   NO! .... nothing there has changed, just another newspaper reporter getting things wrong.  I typed the article word from word, error included.

"The building was acquired in 1977 by a breakaway Catholic organization"  Another error I would like to point out is Traditional Catholic did not break away or leave the teaching of the Church, the Modernist did the breaking away and leaving. I suppose it is correct to say then, that Tradition broke away from Modernism.

Your right to notice that about the name, I did too, and I live here!  What! I thought, but then I realized the reporter was confused, the name Mount St. Michael is the name of the Church even before it was purchased, the CMRI  is the name of our religious order.  Nothing has changed there.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • I thought so.  I just wanted to make sure.  My daughter is coming to Camp St. Philomena at the end of the month, so a crazy statement like that definitely caught my eye.
