Another one they tried to abandon the first verse for is Faith of Our Fathers.
Faith of our fathers, living still!
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword
Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
When e'er we hear that glorious word!
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death
We always sang that every year after Confirmations. It was the big hit song of the day. The parish Church would be packed with about 1200 people. I went back there a few years ago and they've put acoustic tiles on the walls and ceiling, carpeted the floor and put upholstery on the pew seats. The place is DEAD now, sound-wise. Sad.
.
I would suppose that the Newchurch ecuмenists didn't like to have Catholics thinking about dungeons, fires, swords, or fathers for that matter.
.
Like when they tried to stop saying "Holy Ghost" and used "Holy Spirit" instead, with the EXCUSE that when you say "Ghost" it can scare little children. You can't make this stuff up! If that was suggested at a board meeting someone should have said, "You can't be SERIOUS."
.
Then came,
"according to the spirit of Vatican II," which was basically an excuse for everything that was NOT contained in the docuмents.
.
Only problem was, the most
important word, they left out: "the
unclean spirit of Vatican II."
