  • I was just going to post this.  I hope this raises matthew's spirits.  I remember him upset that the sspx did not have one.  I am excited, I think I ought to buy this.

Proceed with caution until you see what it contains.  A couple of years ago when they started to compile this edition in Canada, it appeared they were of the mindset of the Basilian Fathers when they removed many beautiful hymns from the St. Basil Hymnal because they said the hymns were too sentimental.

I hope they respect the tradition of our country and don't try to shove hymns we've never heard of down our throats.
    Let's hope.

  • I hope it doesn't contain Protestant hymns. I would consider ordering it, if it doesn't.

I don't see that we can view a Table of Contents for it.
"It is licit to resist a Sovereign Pontiff who is trying to destroy the Church. I say it is licit to resist him in not following his orders and in preventing the execution of his will. It is not licit to Judge him, to punish him, or to depose him, for these are acts proper to a superior."

  • Just spoke with Angelus Press and they said they would speak to their IT guys and request an index of hymns be added to the site.
Was told it should be on by the end of the day IF they are going to do it.

  • Just a thought
The SSPX chapels will probably be ordering copies at a much discounted price.

Speak to your priest and see if he will include orders from parishoners at a cheaper rate.
After all if people have their own copy he doesn't have to buy so many.

It would also keep them from sprouting legs and walking off...
$35 is pretty steep price when you'd be buying several for a family.  I bought the old ones when we were having a "group" buy and we got them for $10 I think, maybe $15?

  • One thing's for sure. The old hymnal had an introduction (or Forward?) by one Bishop Richard Williamson.
    .
The new edition will have that item missing.

  • I always wondered what was wrong with the old one, and that very nicely explains why they pulled it!  I never even noticed that, but sure enough it's there in black and white.

  • Considering they call both the 1st and 2nd edition Traditional I wish they'd use the traditional 1st verse for the hymn
Immaculate Mary.  Just because the NO dropped it I don't think we should.  And it's NOT too sentimental when many of our prayers contain similar references.

    It should be

Immaculate Mary our hearts are on fire
That title so wondrous fills all our desire

I hope they put it back in.

    :applause:
Whenever I get the chance, that's my choice for verse #1.
I remember as a child feeling great joy singing that from the start.
    Good for you, Miseremini!!

    .
If you want to drop something for being "too sentimental" how about On Eagle's Wings or Amazing Grace?

  • Another one they tried to abandon the first verse for is Faith of Our Fathers.

Faith of our fathers, living still!
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword
Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
When e'er we hear that glorious word!
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death

We always sang that every year after Confirmations. It was the big hit song of the day. The parish Church would be packed with about 1200 people. I went back there a few years ago and they've put acoustic tiles on the walls and ceiling, carpeted the floor and put upholstery on the pew seats. The place is DEAD now, sound-wise. Sad.  :(
    .
I would suppose that the Newchurch ecuмenists didn't like to have Catholics thinking about dungeons, fires, swords, or fathers for that matter.
    .
Like when they tried to stop saying "Holy Ghost" and used "Holy Spirit" instead, with the EXCUSE that when you say "Ghost" it can scare little children.  You can't make this stuff up!  If that was suggested at a board meeting someone should have said, "You can't be SERIOUS."
    .
Then came, "according to the spirit of Vatican II," which was basically an excuse for everything that was NOT contained in the docuмents.
    .
Only problem was, the most important word, they left out: "the unclean spirit of Vatican II."
