New To Tridentine Latin Mass

    • Hi everyone,  

    I'm new to this site; and I've only gone to one Tridentine Latin Mass (recently at a SSPX Chapel). It was a blessing and I could really feel God's presence there, unlike any Novus Ordo Mass I've ever experienced. I have a lot to learn about the Holy Tridentine Mass and I want to start going to it every Sunday (although it is a bit of a commute). I have a few questions:

    First, do I say "Amen" or remain silent when I'm presented with the Holy Eucharist at the Communion rail? It seemed as though people remained silent; and I just said "Amen" silently with my lips because I was unsure.

    Second, are there any online resources where can I learn about the Tridentine Mass so I can better follow along with it? Presently, I'm on a very limited budget so I cannot buy any material to learn about it.  I would ask someone at the Chapel but I do not know anyone there. Thanks for your help. God Bless you all.

    As for Holy Communion, the recipient does not say anything in response to the priest's words...i.e., do not say, "Amen."  The fact that you did so is VERY common among those who are new, so do not worry about it.

    • Hello Ascent! Welcome!

    I'm so happy you've found the Tridentine Mass, I'm sour our Lord is infinitely happier! Don't despair on the commute- many of us travel a good distance to make it to the Holy Sacrifice. If, sometimes, it is too difficult to make it, and out of your control in being able to do so, you could stay home and pray the mass and rosary by yourself, and tell Christ you offer your prayers in union with the masses being said that day.  :wink: I encourage you to stick to the TLM (Tridentine Latin Mass) only, and stay away from the Novus Ordo (N.O.) as much as possible. If you do so, you will see things you've never seen before- I promise. I know I felt extremely uncomfortable with the N.O. once I'd assisted at the TLM for a few months. I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about soon.

    The SSPX is a great place to receive a valid mass. The other good thing about them is their priests are very well trained in the divine liturgy of the mass. If I could tell you to do one thing right now, its this: STUDY, and BE CAREFUL. I am not trying to scare you, but there is MUCH confusion in what we call "Traddie Land". We realize we are without a strong Pope to guide us, and, only naturally, there is much debate and discussion about many things. I encourage you to stay away from such debate and discourse, as you would be most likely prone to discouragement and possible scandal.

    There are some excellent articles in "The Library" here on Cathinfo, which are absolutely free. If you're curious about what you should read, ask someone. More specifically, I would encourage you to ask the following people here via PM (once you are able to in a week) if you like, as I know  they would probably suggest some great stuff: Matthew (the moderator), Hobbledehoy, Gladius_Veritatis, and Caminus (Even though he hasn't been around lately due to a project he's working on). I know these gents are good willed and intelligent and could be a great help.

    I'll say a quick prayer for continued graces from God and protection from his most beautiful, Graceful Mother.

    • Welcome to CatholicInfo, ascent! I'm glad you discovered the Traditional Latin Mass. You are not required to say "Amen" after receiving the Eucharist, nor are you required to make the Sign of the Cross after receiving it. The priest does both of those things for you.

    I suggest visiting the SSPX web-site for more info on the TLM. You can also read along here for more info on the Mass. There is a book the SSPX sells called "The Mass of All Time" that I recommend reading. It explains why we should choose the TLM over the Novus Ordo.

    It's pretty common these days to have to travel a good distance to be able to find a TLM. If you are unable to attend every Sunday, then the Sundays you don't attend just stay home and make a Spiritual Communion.

    • My advice is for you to befriend everyone, at my chapel people go to the basement for coffee and talk after mass, mayhaps they do so at yours? At the very least you may want to introduce yourself to the Priest.

    When I came to the SSPX chapel, I first met with one Priest(Who turned out to be the District Superior of Canada) and he told me to call the usual Chapel Priest, which I did. He told me to come to the basement after mass and introduce myself and he introduced me to everyone a group of us went out for brunch after.

    You've received a great grace in being drawn to the traditional Mass.  Welcome home.

    In addition to what others have said in response to this question, I suggest you think of it this way:  your entire posture (kneeling at the altar rail, reception on the tongue) says, "It is indeed so.  This is true God and true Man under the appearance of bread."  This is what "amen" means.  

    I'm afraid that in the Novus Ordo, "amen" is all too often just an empty utterance.
