  • I have this sin that I have been dealing with pretty much ever since I have come back into the Church. It is a mortal sin. I also have fallen back into my old ways lately. I haven't been seeing God like I was a year ago. I have lost my motivation. Right now i am in a state of mortal sin. I don't feel any remorse like I probably should. I have never been able to get rid of this mortal sin completely. I have gone 2 months at the most without doing it. Thats about the best I can do. Or at least it seems that way. I need some prayers. Maybe that will give me the motivation that I once had. Hopefully anyways. Should I just wait until saturday to go to confession or should I call a priest and confess ASAP?

  • When we sin, it always, always has it's beginnings within our own selfishness. The devil knows that we sin because "we want" this or that pleasure and tempts us into self gratification on account of it.

One of the simplest remedies is to get in the habit of fasting as a form of sacrifice for Our Lord, for Our Lady, for your parents, for you name it. The thing we are after here is ridding ourselves of our own wants by habitually doing something unselfish or, more accurately, anti-selfish.

Fasting for Our Lord gets us in that habit of sacrificing something for God, which helps us deny ourselves our own selfish desires. Even starting small - giving up that piece of candy, giving up that bottle of pop etc. will be very helpful you'll see.

Of course the rosary is the greatest weapon, and the scapular - and repeating throughout the day something along the lines of: "help me Dear Lady to see and flee from all that God despises and embrace with my whole heart all that pleases God."

I would spend the time till your next confession building your resolve to never commit that sin ever again. . . . . .and certainly you'll have all the prayers from us here on CI to help you too!

  • I'd recommend the same remedies.  The Rosary, fasting and other small sacrifices.  I do think you have at least attrition, if not perfect contrition.  If you didn't care, you wouldn't have posted your prayer request.  If you haven't made one, do make an act of contrition and say the Confiteor, naming the actual sin as you pray.  ie., "O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee by _____________________,"  Then go to Confession as soon as it is reasonably possible.  I'd ask the priest for some specific ways to avoid occasions of your sin, and for specific penances if you should fall again.  If you are speaking of a longtime habit, realize that you probably won't find instantaneous deliverance, but that God wants you to "work out your salvation with fear and trembling."  You might also ask Our Lady and your Guardian Angel for assistance in helping you recognize the danger signs sooner.  Ask your priest for the appropriate prayers, perhaps a specific novena.  Whatever happens, do not ever give up.  If the devil tempts you to quit, slack off, avoid Mass, etc. ignore him.  Say your prayers anyway, even if without fervor.  Simply ask your angel to supply the fervor.  Remember what St. Joan of Arc said to her interrogators when asked if she was in a state of grace, "Yes, but if I am not, then I desire the grace to be so."  I'll add you to my prayers tonight.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • IF, thanks for confiding in the crazy trads on CI.
    Here's my two cents:

When you have this temptation, slap yourself on the side of your head.
Make it hard enough so that it hurts.

Amazing how a little self mortification drives the demons away.
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

Ain't that the truth!  Thanks for your trust, IF.
Keep in mind that acknowledging the problem is half the battle, and your humility to admit this and seek prayer from others for strength is very holy.

    Here's my .02, for what it's worth:

    1.  Most important:  If you think you are in a state of mortal sin, find a priest immediately if possible.  Do not "wait until Saturday" for confession unless a priest is not available until then.  Your eternal soul is in jeopardy.  I notice you mentioned you could call your priest - do so and discuss this situation in depth asap.  This holy sacrament is one of the greatest gifts!  If you need motivation to go to confession, read about the Four Last Things.

    2.  When I feel myself tempted into serious sin, or to endure suffering, I must go to a crucifix immediately (or, if not at home, gaze at the one on my rosary, or a wallet picture of the Shroud).  I remind myself of what He endured for me, and pray "I can do anything for You".   Which sounds and IS preposterous, because I am weak and a failure, but when I do this, He gives me instant and incomparable strength, and then great peace.  Temptation gone.

Of course, you have only to ask for prayer and your many friends here on the forum will do so, my friend.

  • Go to confession, and never despair of God's mercy.

And remember, contrition is an act of the will more than it is n emotion.  The fact that you can't manufacture a religious feeling means you are not a Pentecostal.  It does not mean you are not a repentant Catholic.

  • You mentioned that the temptation became worse after you came back to the Church.  The Evil One tries his hardest to keep us from the road to perfection, oftentimes when we make it back onto the path with a desire to do good.  Please don't get discouraged.

You might want to try this little prayer:   "Lord, Jesus Crucified, Have Mercy on Me!"

Say the prayer every free moment you have throughout the day, and when you wake up in the middle of the night, repeat it over again and again until you fall back to sleep.  God hears our every prayer, and He is even more merciful than He is just.

Also, consult a priest in the confessional, and continue your daily Rosary, even if you can't "feel" devotion in the prayers.  Our Faith doesn't need feelings.

Be assured of my prayers for you.

  • I will pray for you, IF.

Seek help from Our Lady, she always is ready to protect her devoted servants from the evil one.

Also, go to Confession as soon as possible.

    God Bless.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.
