    • I am trying to find the name of a martyr who died in North America. He was a priest (Jesuit?) who was killed by Native Americans (Iroquois or Mohawk?) Amongst many other tortures, I believe they plucked out one of his eyes and ate it in front of him. He was so brave that many converted. Does this ring a bell for anyone? I read a fascinating article about him a few years ago, and now I can't remember his name. I tried googling, and I get a list of a group of N.A. martyrs, but I don't think this is the same. Thanks in advance.

    • I believe that's Saint Jean de Brébeuf.

    His skull is held in a reliquary not far from me.  I don't go there for Mass anymore (NO largely improved by Jesuits), but I still visit once in a while.

    Edit: not sure why I anglicised his name...

    • Look up North American Martyrs in Wikipedia.  There are eight of them.

    This saint had some of his fingers chopped off. He returned to Europe and had an audience with the pope. Because some of his fingers were chopped off he was not allowed to say mass. The pope however gave him special permission to say mass. Later Isaac Jogues returned to North America where he was martyred  by the Iroquois.
