  • My 9 or 10 year old cousin is making her first Communion in May, and I would like gift suggestions.

I should mention a list of caveats which should hopefully influence any ideas for a suitable gift.  I don't like to write laundry lists of others' faults, but since this is anonymous it probably shouldn't be scandalous.

She is a 9-10 year old girl
She is not literate and does not care to learn to read or do math
She is very jealous with possessions, and she and her younger sister sometimes fight over things
She plays rough, so I'm afraid that she would break a scapular (if she'd even wear it)
She can be violent (she once found a broken set of Rosary beads and whipped me with them)
Her parents do not make her do anything she doesn't want to do, so I doubt she would pray

The thing is, she's my mom and dad's goddaughter and we'd like to get her something religious.  She WOULD want makeup, dolls, toys, candy, Play-Doh, and so on, but I think that would be giving her the wrong idea.

Online religious gift store recommendations would also be appreciated, as I'd like to get a new set of Rosary beads for myself; mine is missing a few beads.

  • If I had a daughter, she would not get away with half the things my cousin does, trust me.

I also forgot to mention that her family goes to Novus Ordo Masses, so mantillas would be out.

  • How about a book about the lives of the one of the saints for her? Or this kind of toy:

  • A big sweet chocolate cross and a nice 12X16 framed picture of Our Lady!

If she doesn't already have one, get a traditionalist crucifix and hang it in her bedroom.

  • She and her little sister have Justin Bieber posters all over their walls, and I don't think they will make room for Our Lady or a Crucifix.  I asked my mother about getting her a Crucifix since I'm sure her parents would put it up, and she said it sounded like a good idea.  The family does have religious pictures in the dining and living rooms, so it's not like it's anything new or unusual to them.

I see the way they treat their dolls and toys, so I'm reluctant to let them have their way with one of a saint.

  • This is what was settled on.  I don't particularly like it because it looks like a souvenir-quality cross with a common picture blown up to fit on the surface.  My mother and father chose it because it has a picture of a girl on it and was cheap.

I'm going to delay in ordering it for another day or two in case something better comes along.  I'd like to buy a Rosary and a scapular for myself from whatever site we get the cross from since we don't have access to a Catholic gift store (not a traditional one anyway) and they really don't have much of a selection.

  • I don't think one can receive Eucharist if she does not understand what she is doing! One must be able to know prayers to receive Penance first, before Eucharist.  I would not attend Novus Ordo any way!  There are videos for children.

Well they are dealing with the N.O. unfortunately.

  • It was not my choice.

The girl will not listen to me, she insults me.

The father is a supermarket janitor with no high school education.

The mother is a stay at home mom.

There is no TLM around anyway.

Traditional priests and bishops forgot about this part of the country.

  • hi! all this gently said.....
under the circuмstances of this family's attitude i wouldn't worry what gift to give.... i would not give any sacramentals as she would not understand the depth of having them.

what i would do is get a catholic coloringbook of some kind and crayons and
    offer to get her cake.
sadly this will not be a very important  event for her. prayers are with her and her family.

  • Received package in mail today.

    No crucifix in package.

    "Sorry, sold out."

Was given six flimsy paper cards of Communion-related images for free instead.

If the website said they were sold out, would have bought something else.
