Am I the only one, or do others see a difference between

A) naming yourself "Chrysostom", "Ignatius", or "St_Matthew"

and

B) naming yourself, "Blessed Mother", "Spiritus Sanctus", "Trinity", or "God".

Maybe it's a reverence thing? Most cultures refrain from naming their children after Our Saviour, for example.

Maybe it's an identity thing? After all, naming yourself "Mary" might as well be naming yourself "Catholic". What Catholics aren't fond of the Blessed Virgin Mary?

Maybe it's a common sense thing? When you name yourself after ANY saint, you distinguish yourself a bit. You have some identity. There are hundreds of popular saints, but only ONE Queen of Heaven and Earth and ONE God.

I, for one, can't tell ANY of the Marys apart on here. Not even 2 of them, nevermind all of them! They're all just a Marian blur in my head.

Never like the Spanish naming their kids Jesus.......some go really wrong.....best to avoid God's name for your child.....Mary, saints-perhaps much better....

Agreed.

I'm sure they name their children our Lord's name out of respect, but I think it trivializes the name.

Children should be named after Saints and only after Saints.

Our Lady, I believe, is in a third category, but personally, I do not see anything wrong with naming a child Mary, after her. I believe it is the best name you can give a girl.

Some might reverance the name by callinng their daughter Maria, but that is Latin for Mary, but I do not think it is commonizing it to the point of irreverance.

Our first daughter is named Mary, middle name Elizabeth, and our second daughter, Anastasia, had the middle name "Marie" also after our Lady.

I think, generally, it might be good to say "Our Lady" rather than Mary when possible without going bonkers over the rule. I also do a slight head boy at the name of "Mary" when in reference to our Lady, and more of a head bow to our Lord.

Today's children get some of the strangest made up names and I think it a pity.

When I hear the name "Mary" I think of the obvious one and that is a good person to think about.

When I was a cop, we had a guy get arrested for rape/robbery named Jesus.......just not good....parents likely had no way of knowing, but lest not take that chance would be my advice.....

I too don't believe its right to name your child the name above every other name. However, I don't think there's anything wrong with naming your daughter Mary. I rather think it gives honor and glory to Our Blessed Mother. At one time Mary was the most popular name for girls in the world. Hopefully it will be again and soon. My first name happens to be Mary.

I think Matthew is talking about names people choose as their "screen names" on this forum.

I can't tell a bunch of them apart, either.

I think it is very disrespectful to name your son "Jesus." That is the name above all names and should be afforded the due reverence.

What I am also not fond of is the English/American habit of referring to our Blessed LORD or the Blessed Mother as "Jesus and Mary." We are not on a level high enough to refer to them by those names in casual conversation. In prayer it is one thing, and we need to call upon His Name to be saved. When speaking in the third person we should always refer to Him as Our Blessed Lord or our Blessed Mother.

Living in Chicago in an Italian area, many families named their daughters Mary___. One family had 8 Marys! It was always fun to listen to a first timer call there and not know middle names, because, the girls thought it was nerdy to be a Mary Anne or Mary Catherine...We had a great time then, lol.

It would be disrespectful to name someone Yeshua --Jesus is a corrupt translation.

Yea, I've known more than my share of "Hay-soos's" and they really didn't do the Lord's name any justice. I really don't understand where that came from within the Latinos from a supposedly religiously devout Catholic culture.

Being named after the saints I can understand, but God himself?

Growing up Italian in New York we had plenty ourselves, including my mother, of course there's the variant ethnic form of "Maria" that was pretty popular in the old days as well. You could see how at weddings and family functions someone would yell "Mary or Maria" and about ten girls would turn around.

John Wayne's real name was Marion Michael Morrison - the male version of Mary.

I often wonder if it was his birth name that helped him get baptized in his hospital bed, a day and a half later he died. Deo Gratias!

When my son was about six I had a customer named Jesus, he had this look of amazement and his eyes were so big! :)
