  • I was outside today when our (adopted, stray) cat came up to me with a small (dead) rabbit dangling from her mouth.

She plopped it down, and waited for my input.

I just watched her -- in fact I called the kids outside. After she cleared it with me, she went back to it and started sniffing around its head (and I thought, "oh boy, here goes...")

Sure enough, she dug in. She started with the head -- CRUNCH CRUNCH and worked away at that little critter. She was sticking her head inside it once the head was gone, and I thought she was going to hollow it out.

She ended up eating EVERYTHING except a small pile of dark green goo -- possibly the stomach contents, or maybe an organ she didn't like. I did see her sniffing it and rejecting it.

But there's nothing else left of that entire rabbit! She must have been hungry.

I guess that's why we don't have as many rabbits on our acreage these days -- all the cats are getting them. I haven't seen a mouse in a long time. And we live in what's essentially a big field, so I know there used to be mice.

  • You have useful cats!

I remember when I was a kid, probably 5 or 6, my cat did the same thing (brought the rabbit to me) with a little baby rabbit, but it was still alive. I was horrified and scolded the cat and took the rabbit away. Then I went and told my mom that we had to save it and she scolded ME! Lol. .... telling me I should have let the cat eat it.

I didn't understand her reasoning as a kid, but she was definately right. I should have let the cat eat it. My dad had to end up killing it because it was going to die anyway. I cried for hours.

Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

  • Dear Matthew,
That was interesting, and possibly also a bit scary. :laugh1:
I am not even sure why it was possibly a bit scary. Maybe it is the bit where it started eating the rabbit's head!

Also, it is strange that a cat would eat almost all of the rabbit.
I would have thought it would just eat a large amount, and then leave some unpleasant carcass, or whatever.
Or possibly some offal (not that I even know exactly what that is - I tend to steer clear of stuff like that :laugh1: ).

I did not even know that cats ate things like rabbits.
Maybe I would have thought that they would just eat small creatures like birds or mice.

You often learn things on CathInfo. Usually less surreal things!!

  • I saw a rabbit in the woods near a trail by the golf course the other day. I was very close to him there, and he was "chilling" and chewing on something. He was a "conversationalist" sort of rabbit, relaxing for a while in his neck of the woods, and then he took off. He was very fast. He went through the bushes like a rocket.

Any cat that would catch him would have had to have had a plan. That rabbit was the fastest animal I've seen in a while.

  • Over the years we've had lots of cats, all with very different critter preferences.

My oldest son has decided that cats are sociopaths as far as animals go.  They catch some critter, bring it home to it's family, and make you watch while they kill and eat it.   :stare:

One cat we had preferred birds.  He was also in the habit of eating a bird, then regurgitating it on the table when he got home.  Not pleasant.

We had one cat that preferred squirrels.  One, my favorite who we had for 12 years, was an amazing mice catcher.  She liked to leave little mice gifts on the porch for us.

We have one now that likes rabbits.  Funny thing, I didn't really understand how still little rabbits can be when they are hunted.  It's no wonder cats catch them.  They just lay there.

We don't stop our cat from catching the little rabbits and spring is just around the corner.  My neighbor freaks out every year over the cat eating the rabbits.

Oh, cats will go blind without the taurine in meat.  It's why they hunt and why we shouldn't stop them from eating those cute little bunnies.

  • Wow, a cat as it was created to be  :applause:

In my previous life we used to have cats which actually had been catching mice ( as ones supposed to) and some were eating them, some weren't.

But beware - if you have some town ordinance and a bad neighbor you may be reported as abusing the cat.

The latter is actually just a bit stretched - our county recently introduced a local law which is not only worse than nαzι or commie-like ones, but will possibly make guilty ( until proven otherwise) anyone who owns a pet - so incredibly stupid it is.

  • A good thing about CathInfo, is that it is not full of people who are “morally” upset over the demise of animals. Empty-headed vegetarians, looney save-the-whale types, etc.

People really matter, and animals hardly matter at all by comparison.
That is a proper Catholic moral viewpoint.

Catholics should care far more about people than about mere animals.

It is good that people on CathInfo get their priorities in the correct order.

The modern world has its ideas about compassion totally skewed.

  • You are right on, Sede!
One of my pet peeves (no pun intended), is when women and men buy dogs and treat them better than their children! Or, the child moves out, and the dog or cat takes precedence!!! I especially can't stand clothes and costumes for dogs!!

    Love,

    Thank you, Michaela.
Also, I read about a place where pet owners could take their pets for some kind of crazy thing like cups of tea, or something like that!!!!

I can’t remember exactly what it was they did there, but whatever it was, it was nuts!!

  • Yeah, and don't get me started about "pet therapy"... Where the owners ACTUALLY TAKE THEIR PETS to some kind of quack "pet therapist" or "psychic".  I especially find richy-rich society lapdogs with diamond collars that cost more than your car to be cray-zee!! I mean, come on!!!

Yep.  That pretty much covers it.  I have a cat and like her well enough, but I definitely prefer my dogs.

Well, as another poster said, the cat behaved like a cat.  It hard to be mad at an animal for doing what it has to.

    ***sigh***

guys, the cat is just being a very loyal and devoted animal to you - the master. it hunts the prey and first takes it to YOU - if you do not want it - THEN the cat will eat the prey.
