  • I strongly recommend the book "The Theory of Evolution Judged by Reason and Faith" by Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini. It received the imprimatur (by Cardinal Spellman) and Nihil Obstat in 1959.  According to Wikipedia:

"[Cardinal Ruffini was] a stern opponent of reform,[6] he attended the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), and sat on its Board of Presidency. Ruffini was also part of the conservative-minded study group Coetus Internationalis Patrum at the council. He was forced to intervene in a heated discussion between Cardinals Alfredo Ottaviani and Augustin Bea in the course of the last preparatory session of the Council. During the discussion on the Council's proposed declaration against anti-Semitism, Ruffini accused the docuмent of being overly kind to the Jews, whom the Cardinal saw as hostile to Christianity.[7] He also disapproved of Gaudium et Spes,[8] Sacrosanctum Concilium, and Dignitatis Humanae."

His book is very Thomistic in its approach and debunks virtually all of the evolutionary "proof" around at the time - much of what he says applies to future discoveries.

In each chapter he goes through each proof - from paleontology, embryology, biogeography, comparative anatomy and physiology, parasitic life, and genetics and shows how they are all false.

In the second part of the book he covers the true origin of man (including fossils) and strictly connects it to the traditional Catholic manner of thinking.  This is probably the greatest work by a modern Catholic against evolutionary theory.

Edited to add: Ruffini was a pababile at the election of John XXIII - if only he had been selected instead!
