Anyone seen ? It's about Our Blessed Mother, citing only Scripture but filled with patristic insights, intended for evangelizing Protestants to the Faith. I thought it was nicely done.

Did anyone ever call the Virgin Mary "Mother Mary" before Vatican II?

I see this term on lots of gnostic / New Age Christianity / pagan-scented kind of websites. Here's an example from one: "With the 'deification' of the goddess Mother Mary, the true image of the Creatrix and Conqueror of the Serpent returns..." From Magus Books, they sell a video: "Visions of and Communications from Mother Mary." From a gardening page called Living Arts Originals with New Age overtones: "Heartsease is known as the 'Herb Trinity' and was common in medieval paintings of Mother Mary." From another essay called The Divine Feminine: "The point, to me, is that the three works of art in this church all pay homage to Mary Magdalene's special relationship to Christ, whatever that relationship may have been. In a way Ziegler's depiction of Jesus and Mary M. is a mirror image of the second photo, above, showing Mother Mary with her crown of glory in heaven next to the Father: they are the Queen and King of Heaven." ( Of course this author is alluding to the gnostic heresy that Jesus and Mary Magdalene may have been married ). From an "Interfaith" site: "In medieval art and thinking Mother Mary had to fulfill all the old roles of the goddesses."

This term is CONSTANTLY used by women with VII / New Age / witch influence. It's clear. I don't want to make a knee-jerk statement and say there's anything wrong with the term. I don't see anything intrinsically wrong with it, she is God's mother and our mother. Perhaps it blurs a little too much her role as Mother of God. I just have never read a book from the time before VII where the Virgin Mary is referred to as Mother Mary.

I can't remember if she was called Mother Mary prior to Vatican II, could be because she has so many Titles, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Guadalupe, etc. just look at the Litany of the Blessed Virgin to see all her titles, plus many more.

What I could never understand is, why is it when I am praying to her, someone will advise me to pray to her under this Title or that Title, isn't she the same Blessed Mother?

Even in spiritual reading you can read that Our Lady of the Blessed Trinity was her favorite title, then in another book you read where Our Lady of ? was her favorite.

I can see your concern Raoul, and the reason is the Modernist are good at taking a truth and stretching it, exaggerating till it becomes a heresy.

Mother Mary =/= Mother Earth ??

Yeah, the line is blurring between New age and Catholicism. Plain to see for me, atleast.

It's probably because English isn't my first language. We call the Blessed Virgin "Maria Matha" in my native tongue which roughly translates "Mary Mother" or "Mother Mary". :)

So I guess it comes from force of habit. But now that I think of it, you're right, I don't think I've read many Saints use that term. St.Thomas calls her "the Blessed Virgin".
