Oh, but God does tolerate bad behavior! If He didn't, we would all have been wiped off the face of the earth a long time ago! The amazing thing is that He loves us anyway. And there is the heart of the Christian message. In spite of all of our faults, we are commanded to love each other and forgive each other as God loves and forgives us. It's what we pray every day in the Our Father. We ask God to treat us as we treat others. How can we expect forgiveness from God if we can't forgive our neighbors? It is in that way, our capacity to love and forgive, that we are truly made in God's own image. If we lose that ability, we lose all resemblance to God and we turn away from Him and the paradise He has prepared for us. We turn into that Pharisee, praying at the Wall in Jerusalem, thanking God that he's not a lousy sinner like that publican standing next to him, beating his breast in repentance.
Humility is accepting the fact that even though you may have improved in some areas, maybe you are a little bit closer to God than some other people, but you still recognize that you are a stiff-necked, obstinate sinner in need of divine mercy. Maybe that jackass you encountered today was having one of his worst days. Maybe he's really miles ahead of you on the race towards salvation. Our vision is so clouded by sin, and so obscured by our enemies the flesh, the world, and the devil, that we can never really be sure of how far ahead or behind others we are. And that's a good thing. That's what makes us humble. That's what makes us turn like little children towards God in need of His mercy, without which we will surely perish.
