  • Well it's probably not going to be a bat, whom just greeted me! Let me start by saying that it caused actual fear in me. As my ceilings are low, and in a small room, my head was in perfect target range for landing. So I ducked down low, and since I was folding my wash I had a sock in my hand.

  ....... So I threw the sock into the air to keep him up high. O but then I forgot about my friend Mr. Gravity. O I forgot that the sock would not stay up in the air and come back down at me! I didn't even chuck it across the room. So I bolted out the room, and closed the door.

Since this is my first encounter with bats in the home I had to take a crash course. I got my 10 minute certification from Google Technical Institute.

So I cut out the bottom of a gallon jug, blessed myself with holy water, and then headed to the room. O what's that! My little friend managed to make a sneak attack and met me in the living room instead. With ceilings that still make me look like a dwarf, I had to duck once again, and bolted to the door. Opened it, and then like a man, I ran to the kitchen and peaked around corner. Yes it ended without combat as he went out the door.

Disappointed, yet relieved, the mission was over. I wanted to see him close up in the jug. Nevertheless I didn't want to get bit. Do note that I have no children or persons to defend, and next time I will throw the sock across the room. :)

Yuck!  Bats are one of the few creatures that give me the creeps. There is something about the leather wings that I find disgusting.  Last year my Dad opened the shower door, only to have a bat fly out into the bedroom.  My 91 year old mother who normally uses a cane made a sudden recovery, fleeing down the hall, down a long flight of stairs, through the kitchen, and right out of the house!  I think she set a new record for senior sprinting.  Dad whacked at the bat with a dust mop and cornered it in the walk-in closet. He threw a bath towel over it, scooped it up like in a sack, took it to the window and dropped it, towel and all to the driveway.  It lay there for a few seconds, then flew away.  He never had to touch it.  My Mom refused to let him touch the towel, so he ended up using a shovel to dump it in the trash can.  The question that has never been answered is how the bat got into the house in the first place!

It could be worse. This past May, my friend discovered a nest of baby copperheads on the floor of her linen closet.  Mama snake was never located!
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • Bats are actually fascinating and helpful creatures. I like to sit on the patio on these summer evenings and watch a few bats make a circuit over the neighborhood, zooming in on the tasty bugs that hang out around the fruit trees. They really get a bad rap, though you should never handle one, rabies is always a possibility with any wild mammal. Once a family member brought one home that had been battered with brooms and magazines at work, and we kept him in a cage and gave him water until he was well enough to fly away at dusk. Sounds crazy, I know. (batty?) I think fruit bats are cute, (they look a bit like little foxes) the noses on regular bats are ugly... I have carried around the plans for a bathouse for years, and now that we own a home I can start pestering the men in my family to build it. Thanks for the reminder...

  • Humor comforts me, so I'd have to go with the would-be robber squirrel who broke in once! Bless his little black heart!

They can get in through openings as little as 1/8 of an inch - or so the bat exterminator told me.

I woke up to one in my bedroom a few years ago  - and I totally believe it made your mom sprint through the house, down the stairs and out the door lol - them things are evil imo. I have no problem with them outside, but not inside, nope, definitely not inside.

They usually hang out in the attic and find some little spot to squeeze through to get right down into the house.

Best thing to do if you see one hanging on your bedroom wall, is sneak up and whack it a good one with a tennis racket or something like that - - that will kill it and you'll be done with it - just dispose of it.

Socks do not work, all throwing socks at it does is irritate it IMO - then it'll keep coming at you till you swat it down or get out of there.

    Bite your tongue, sciurophobe!  :heretic:

It was mea culpa, not eius culpa. Spoiled him with a regular feeding schedule, and both missed the morning feeding AND forgot to close the window. I imagined a screen would be security enough.

No dissection necessary to see a black heart where one clearly exists!

  • Bats and Squirrels! Two of my favorite critters- being abused and defamed!

Think twice about that tennis racket:

(If it were sea-snakes or octopi I would definitely agree, however.)

  • My most comfortable animal is a dog.  Dogs have fun all the time they want to play and years back when I had a stressful political job, I used to go home drained and then took my puppy for a walk and by his stupidity and craziness, he made me laugh, and he was such a wonderful healer of my stress....so I always love dogs.
