I'm all in favor of pets, but this is plain silly!  You see plenty of homos with canine and feline "children" around New York.  (I'd rather not see them at all, but better they have animals than adopted babies!)  The same may go for a self-centered "career" single.

Not just the Church as an entity, but something so basic as the instinct for motherhood is [turned into something] so perverted that women would waste it on an animal who loves anyone who feeds it.

People with severe character flaws are entirely acceptable to their pets, so long as they feed them.  So they don't have to worry about whether other people will appreciate them, because their animal(s) do(es).  Then they get together at the "dog park" or the Vet's waiting room and compete for their exaggerations of their subjective reality -- "my story is more amazing than yours."  (Not in so many words.)

Go to the animal shelter and try talking to people.  They most often like to talk about animals, and, if they're honest, they might tell you the truth:  They really believe that people are nothing and animals are everything, because people can be so cruel and animals will never hurt you.  They believe that because they feed their pets.............  Try not feeding them and see if they won't hurt you!  It can happen by accident.  And it has.  Lots of times.

Not everyone who goes to an animal shelter is a nut!  Years ago, we adopted a dog, "Mr. Peabody" from the shelter.  He was a great family pet!  (Not another child!)

Actually, these are 2 excellent points, Frances.

Neil O, man  did you hit the nail on the head.   I'm astounded at the extent of antrhopomorphism even among very intelligent people.  They are so disoriiented that they project their psych needs and issues onto their pets, convinced that they think like people.

I know exactly how this works, I have all my sisters and mother with tiny dogs.
It is absolutely exasperating.  In the beginning I thought it was a good idea, because my mom, recently widowed, couldn't seem to get past her loneliness.  But then it became an obsession, dog clothes, diapers, special home-cooked meals, a pint of haagen dazs everyday!  And when we visited her the darn dog would yap so much at my daughter, who was only 2yo, my mom actually expected us to adjust to the dog!

 Aaargh!
