  • While perusing my copy of W Barry's Papal Monarchy( recommended reading) I ran into a phrase where he refers to Moors as a 'non-semetic' people.

Apparently not all arabs are semetic. Possibly Dylan could lend his expertise to the subject-- what about Saracens, Berbers etc?

  • Many of the Moors were Berbers (Imazighen), others were Arabs or of mixed Arab/Berber ancestry. The Berbers are classified as a Hamitic people based on their language (Tamazight), but the Berbers who inhabit the northern Maghreb, Mediterranean, and the Atlas Mountains are typically light brown to pallid in complexion and have a high frequency of blond and red hair and green and blue eyes relative to the region as a whole. Those who live in and around the Sahara zone range from brown to very dark.

  • So moors are arabs who are not semetic and U agree with Barry? --or it's not quite that simple. We are all familiar w/ how Israrelites and Caananites mixed or how Romans and Brits became the English.

The article didn't mention the semetic question.

The article is somewhat vague in that the semetic question is not mentioned. I guess it would be somewnat accurate then to call the moors a hametic/ semetic people?
