:scratchchin: Missing Mass WAS your fault because you were presumptuous in believing that you would be able not only to wake up in time to get there, but would also be attentive. Watch out for the word "intent." How many felons doing time "intended" for prison to be the result of their crime? The party-animals in the campground last night did not "intend" to be arrested by the state police on charges of open containers, drugs, public indecency, public nuisance, endangering the welfare of minors, menacing, illegal dumping, creating a fire hazard, and arborcide. (Latter is for chopping down a live tree!) They intended to have a "good time." So missing Mass IS your fault unless you were forced against your will to stay up so late. (If I had overslept, and missed Mass, it would NOT be a sin because I was unable to safely hike past the party-ers to notify the police. There is no cell or internet service in the woods, so I was forced to stay awake in my tent until 4:30am. Then I had to give info. to the sheriff, and move my campsite, lest the few that got away into the woods return tonight. I made it to 11:00 Mass, nonetheless. I'm going to move into the gated area, set up, take a Sunday nap!). You get my point!
As for the novus ordo, don't bother. You may as well go to a protestant service! Hey, we all get indulgent. Make a sincere Act of Contrition, read the Missal, pray 15 Decades, go to Confession, and go to bed early next Saturday! Make that your intention. If you are in a habit of staying up too late, make one concrete step, this day, to do the opposite. Ask Our Lady for help. Mothers are good with bedtimes!
