  • Sad to hear. Pray that he doesn't end up committing adultery once the civil divorce goes through. Since he is known as a devout Catholic (and traditonal one at that) it would cause such a scandal.

Mel Gibson's wife files for divorce

After 28 years and seven kids, Mel Gibson and his wife Robyn Moore are divorcing.

Moore filed the papers early Monday in Los Angeles, citing "irreconcilable differences,".

The couple has yet to reveal the reasons for the split They did, however, release the following statement to People: "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so."

The couple has had seven children together since marrying in 1980. According to the legal docuмents, Moore is seeking joint custody of their nine-year-old son (their other six kids are all over the age of 18). She's also hoping to secure spousal support - which, considering the lack of a pre-nup, could see Moore taking away nearly $500 million U.S. According to Radaronline.com, Gibson is worth some $900 million, and according to California law, Moore is entitled to half of his assets.

  • It sounds like SHE is seeking the divorce though -- isn't she supposed to be traditional too?

No, she's not Catholic, she's Anglican.

  • What a terrible mess. The newspapers say they have pictures of Mr. Gibson in questionable situations (course they have been after him for years now since The Passion.) Traditio has a little running commentary on it as well. They say he is very sad when seen in Church.

God has seen me in MANY "questionable situations" - as in, it is questionable WHY He allowed me to live after such things.  If the newspapers have photos, we would likely already be seeing them.

Who profits from their commentary?  Cannot a man go through something this devastating with a little privacy, at least from his fellow Catholics?  Have we not known for years, most CLEARLY, that things are not perfect with Mel, from his movies, or with ourselves, from our own consciences?  His movie career did not begin and end with his film on the Passion, and the others indicate that he has some things he needs to work out.  What, specifically, is his business.  I have my own mess to clean up, and time is running out.  His film on the Passion at least indicated that he knows, probably better than I, where and to Whom to turn - may he do so at this hard moment.

  • I will not stand in judgment against them.

Looking at the situation from a standpoint of someone completely not involved in anything related to them, I see two things.

    1) He married a non-catholic, and someone who did not convert. That right there is bound to cause problems. There are already difficult things to endure as a married couple that are truly Catholic, that throwing a non-Catholic into the mix will inevitably pose a problem at one point or another, and it's just really sad that it had to come to this.

    2) Mel Gibson, in his own admissions, has a drinking problem. I know from personal experience that things can become almost unbearable in that type of situation, even in a Catholic home, with one person abusing alcohol to a point they go on wild tirades, do self-destructive things, and sometimes rarely get violent, depending on the disposition of the person.

That said, from my sophomoric point of view, as a bystander, having no real knowledge of the two of them, I can see both of these things magnifying whatever problems they have, if there are more of them.

I will pray that whatever differences they have, they can persevere in their married life, with the immense grace God gave them in the sacrament of marriage, and perhaps iron out whatever problems they have.

My heart goes out to both of them. Now, especially now, we need to be sticking together.
    Matthew 5:37

I'm with Gladius on this one. Interesting though it may be for traditional Catholics to learn about Mel Gibson's marital problems, it smacks of the love of gossip displayed in the secular press. It really is none of our business, we must pray for them, and that is all we should say. A running commentary on a website that claims to be Catholic is nothing better than the vicious reporting that we expect from the gossip columns in the worst secular newspapers.

  • They are trying to combat the secular news. They seem to be on speaking terms with Mr. Gibson and they see their friend being smeared  and so they are speaking out that there are indeed two sides to the story. They are doing so to because being such a larger than life figure many are scandalized by this situation. Most will conclude that Mel is the guilty party without thinking that marriage only ends this dramatically after 28 years with both being guilty. They point that out without making excuses for Mel's behaviour.
    Whatever.

  • He was photographed hugging a Russian model at the beach. The news article says that after he hugged her, he kissed her passionately. Well, if the camera already caught him hugging her, why didn't the camera also catch the kiss a few seconds later? A kissing picture would have made more money. The fact that they dont' have a picture of him kissing her (which they could have easily obtained since the camera was already on them when they were hugging a few seconds earlier), proves that this accusation is a lie. The media have it in for Mel Gibson, ever since the whole "Passion of Christ" controversy. They are spreading calmuny about him - suggesting he is having an affair when that is not true. They had the perfect opportunity to proveit it with a camera shot couldn't because it never happened.

Mel Gibson hugging the Russian model could have just been a friend hugging a friend. Although, it would be wise on the part of Mel Gibson not to get too close in friendship or contact with the opposite sex. Firstly, because he should not put himself in a situation of temptation. Secondly, because an innocent outing with a female friend could be twisted by the media to bring him down as they tried to do in the hugging episode.

  • You are spot on Alex. And, this is scandal to many, and will be used by the media to blacken those who are called Traditional Catholics. That is why Traditio is writing the commentaries. Want to bet Abe Foxman was holding the camera while Mel hugged the girl?

No, she's not Catholic, she's Anglican.

CORRECTION: She's Episcopalian (which I believe is the American version of Anglicanism).

  • The Anglicans have High and Low churches, if you will.  Episcopalians may be roughly categorized as the Low Church portion of things.  Their "service" is very similar to the NOM, word for word in places.  I know because I went to Episcopalian schools from K until 12.  The word for word aspect struck me like a swift kick to the head once I started looking at the TLM, etc.  Hello, people...  :fryingpan: ...if the NOM is just like Protestant services, it is Protestant.

  • I don't really understand why anyone would pray in particular for Mel Gibson and his family more than any other myriad of trad families that are going through marital strife or any other number of sad situations (it seems like God sends an almost unbelievable amount on the families of St. marys).  He is a man like any other man, with the same human nature and tendency towards sin.  my only thoughts are that since he is in the public eye so much, how much the greater is his responsibility to represent the faith with more integrity?  Regardless, I am not going to buy into the modern media's fetish of prying into the private lives of the people they determine to be more important than other people.
