Can't say for sure which thing I did that fixed it, but at least it's fixed.
What all did you do? Quite often electronics can have their problem caused by a loose or dirty connection, so maybe you bumped a connection.

I'm not giving up on that one yet. My son is still a Software Engineering major and my daughter's job is a mix of accounting and website development. As Seraphina said, I think that comment had more to do with finding a safe place morally, but it could still be a good place financially as well. Unemployment in the sector might be high right now, but that's still a lot of people that do have a job.
