The hype of the uneducated -- the article in the OP appears to be a scare tactic.
Trust in God. Do not fear.
Below is data from
www.spaceweather.comHOLES IN THE SUN'S ATMOSPHERE: Earth is about to be strobed by three streams of solar wind--each flowing from a hole the sun's atmosphere. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed the gaseous spigots on July 29th:
These are "coronal holes"--places where the sun's magnetic field peels back and allows solar wind to escape. Coronal holes look dark in extreme ultraviolet images of the sun because glowing-hot plasma normally contained there is missing. The first of the streams is expected to arrive on Aug 1st, followed by two more in rapid succession on Aug. 4th. Polar geomagnetic unrest and possibly some minor magnetic storms are possible on those dates. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras, especially in the southern hemisphere where winter darkness favors visibility.
So, we can expect difficulties with radio communications with lots of radio static. Do not depend totally on your GPS for driving instructions as you may end up in the Pacific Ocean. >
Use logic and all your senses. You should be fine.
I would be more concerned with the rising area that is located between the three coronal holes as that hot plasma could lift forming a massive hyderflare. If that hyderflare explodes, it could send a direct CME toward the earth. If that hyderflare is a significantly longer lasting M or X solar class flare, which spews coronal mass ejections (CMEs) toward the earth, then we could have problems with our electric grids because we are in a time of solar minimum when the earth's geomagnetic field strength has weakened. Hyderflares that explode sending a CME toward earth are usually longer enduring solar flares than a CME emanating from an active region during a solar maximum.
Study the Carrington Event of 1859 which caused deaths and electrocuted Western Telegraph workers. We could have a repeat of that. Hopefully our grid is hardened and we will not experience such an event. We would have a few days of warning because it takes time for any CMEs to travel from the sun to our earth. What we have done is to disconnect our electricity and/or unplug our appliances during the arrival of the CME. No problems.
Smart phones - I do not have one, but are they safe during a CME? I would not trust that technology. Shut it off.
There may be a problem if you have an electric smart meter.
