  • For all of you liturgy sleuths:

Why does the missal call for Missa Dilexisti for the feast of St. Lucy, most definitely a glorious martyr?  :scratchchin:

The so-called Common Masses were not so Common in sacred yore, when the glorious Martyrs such as the Virgin St. Lucy had the Mass Dilexisti as a proper Mass. Forsooth, the Masses that testify to the ancient cultus of the sacred Martyrs, and later that of Confessors, Virgins who were not Martyrs and holy Matrons who were neither Virgins nor Martyrs, became the "Common" Masses of other like Saints as the various liturgical books used for the august Sacrifice were compiled into the various Sacramentaries that eventually became the Missals with which we are now acquainted.

Be pleased, I humbly pray, to vouchsafe me some more patience, and I shall post the commentary of Cardinal Schuster upon the Mass of St. Lucy as soon as I can.

Work is kinda hectic right now, and I just got home...

  • Here is a commentary upon the Mass for the feast of the Virgin Martyr, Saint Lucy, taken from the late Cardinal Schuster's The Sacramentary (Liber Sacramentorum): Historical and Liturgical Notes on the Roman Missal (vol. III, trans. Arthur Levelis-Marke; New York: Benziger Brothers, 1927).
