  •    Back when I was an indulter, I attended a private Mass in a home said by an FSSP priest (who is not their Superior General).

I don't know what the correct canonical answer to the question is, but to me it would seem the whole house would become an immediate relic once Our Lord had been there physically.

For that reason, I have always been very mixed on the subject.

I do not think you could treat your house as any old house after that point without risking impiety.

But again, that might just be my own tenderness on this particular point.

  • I've had three Masses said in my home.  All three were celebrated by SSPX priests, two of whom were superiors.  My sons were the altar boys; very beautiful and moving experiences for my family.  Deo Gratias.

  • Yes, Mass can be said in someone's home.  Back in the 70s we sometimes assisted at Mass in homes of Catholics.  I remember that the priest would say some prayers before Mass and sprinkle holy water around.  I am thinking that he was either saying some Excorcism prayers or maybe blessing the home, but I'd have to ask a priest.

I also attended Masses sometimes at various times in hotel conference rooms, particularly back in the 70s and I also remember the priest praying some prayers before Mass there also.

Interesting - I feel the same way, but am leaning toward the house not being a relic.

We know that Baptism, Extreme Unction, Exorcism are fine at home..I wonder what the rule is?

  • Mass can be said just about anywhere for sufficient reason, like the lack of an available church.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

       .

But we are supposed to make our homes a sacred refuge and avoid mortal sin more than fire or fatal poison...we are encouraged to enthrone the Sacred Heart in our homes, and if we own first class relics ...

I'm thinking it is probably fine to have Mass offered at home.

Like I said, I don't know what the rule is, but some posts that came after mine make good points, so...

  • I have been in the traditionalist movement since the 1970s and have been at lots of Masses that SSPX priests and independents offered in private homes and in places like hotel conference rooms. The priests put a small altar stone on the table they used for Mass or sometime used a Greek corporal, which had relics in it.
