  • A very gracious well spoken Catholic here wrote me and I will not share that comment, but I will share my reply. It is below the following introductory comment of mine.

I think there are many who have the impression that recognize and resist as it is commonly understood was Archbishop Lefebvre's position. And this understanding is that somehow compromise with syncretism or apostasy is included. And also that Baptism of Desire (BOD) is an escape clause for pagans to dodge Baptism and not be Baptized. Nothing could be further from the truth. Or conversely the idea is that a man dying on the desert with no one else there and no water at all to be Baptized with (this is taken from St. Augustine's example) if he truly confesses God and His Christ is still damned for lack of physical water -  St. Augustine disagreed and said of course the sincere confession is salvific for that individual. Of course it is.

My reply to the very gracious well spoken Catholic:

BOD is applicable when the preaching of the Gospel and the person to perform a water Baptism are not present. It is not, nor could it ever be an excuse to ignore the commands of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Even when BOD is applicable it is imperative that a true act of faith and contrition be made by the person who desires salvation. None of that can involve idolatry since that violates anyone's conscience.

But worse yet, when those people who claim to be Baptized Catholics and Christians encourage people to go on in their damnable idolatry and even blame the Holy Spirit, the people committing the absolute worse sin are those so called Catholics and Christians. At that point they are apostate and no longer belong to Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The pagans, even when they are misled by false Catholics and Christians, still are conscience bound to discover the truth and confess the True God and His Christ in order to be saved.

To obscure any of this with an improper application of BOD is an extremely reckless and, if on purpose then extremely grievous, sin.

The Assisi abomination is simply put - nothing but Antichrist instigated total Apostasy.

The Great Apostasy has been advancing upon us more and more since the 1958 Conclave and the V2 false Council. Archbishop Lefebvre and Bishop Castro De Mayer and Father Lauriers and Cardinal Siri and many others were well aware of this.

I think that Archbishop Lefebvre's approach was often prudential and should not be misinterpreted to approve of heresy or apostasy.
