  • No wonder Martin Sheen played a Novus Ordo priest in the movie "The Conflict".

Catholic actor Martin Sheen: ‘the Church is not God’ on gαy ‘marriage’ issue

    Kathleen Gilbert

LOS ANGELES, April 3, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Actor Martin Sheen has defended his position in favor of redefining marriage despite his Catholic faith, saying that “my religion’s highest standard is conscience.”

Sheen was asked about the apparent conflict between his Catholic identity and his stance on marriage by the Wilshire & Washington blog following his performance in a play that raised $2 million for a gαy rights lobby group. Sheen played the role of one of the plaintiffs in the play “8,” a dramatic rendition of the Proposition 8 trials written by Dustin Lance Black, who also wrote the screenplay for the 2008 movie Milk.

“My religion’s highest standard is conscience. Nothing can get between your conscience and God, not even the Church, because for 2,000 years, my Church has been lifting up as exemplary various men and women in their lives who have served as inspiration to all of us over the centuries, and we call them saints,” Sheen said, as quoted by the blog.

The West Wing actor pointed out that “the Church has not condemned a single soul to hell because it does not have the authority” and that “the Church is not God.”

“The Church is a conduit, and it is a spiritual journey, but it is not the end of the journey,” said Sheen. “The church is an institution, primarily of men, at least they are the major authorities. And so they are flawed, obviously. And so they are not authorized from preventing any member from following their conscience no matter what that is. You can’t get between a person’s conscience and their God. Nobody can do that.”

Although known to support generally liberal views – he was a strong advocate for Barack Obama’s presidential run - the seasoned Hollywood actor has voiced opposition in the past to some leftist cultural positions, such as assisted ѕυιcιdє and abortion.

Last year, Sheen spoke of his opposition to abortion, revealing that his wife was nearly killed by abortion after she was conceived in rape and describing how he supported unplanned pregnancies in his own family.

  • We should also remember his real name isn't Sheen.  It's Estevez.

Why should we remember that, in this context?
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • "The Conflict" was a lame movie, by the way. I bought it on DVD two years ago thinking it would be good. It wasn't. At the end of the film, the Traditional monks go back to praying in English instead of Latin. Horrible ending.

  • The film was good at showing back then how the world had been turned upside down. The hippie authority figure from Newchurch played by Sheen was sent to an outpost of dinosaur monks in order to reform them. Between these two extremes the film tries to elicit sympathy for the abbot caught in the middle. Though he is portrayed as a weak easy-going character wonderfully played by Trevor Howard, the abbot captures the contemporary mood of religious indifference relying on a bureaucratic role to mask his disappearing faith.

    Yea, too bad.

I'm sure that's the "gαy friendly" side.

  • I think the distinction between Sheen's defense of his actions in opposition to Church authority vs. Traditionalist opposition would be a good one to have.

The Neo-Caths constantly accuse us of being Sheen in reverse. They say he errs on the left, we err on the right and we are both disobedient.

Interested in hearing how best to refute this.

So if your conscience tells you to believe something that contradicts Church teaching you choose to be dishonest and remain in the Church instead of leaving. These liberal types think the Church is so elastic. It mine as well not exist.

    Maybe by telling the truth?

What is Sheen's defense besides emotion or how he "feels" about an issue as opposed to Church doctrine, dogma and tradition. Both of which trads are more closely in line with.

  • This sort of thing makes me infuriated. ALL of the pro-abortion or pro-gαy 'marriage' catholic politicians always resort to "Vatican II says that Conscience has primacy!!!". Such moral relativism!
