  • Lepanto, are you at all familiar with Baltimore?

Mommy, why are there police in the front yard?
Are we bad for having a slumber party tonight?

Don't worry, dear.  Daddy will take care of this.

Mr. Stewart, we are the curfew police and we have it on reliable testimony that you're harboring children who belong to other families here this evening is that correct?

Yes, officer, my daughter has several friends over for a slumber party.

Mr. Stewart, you are in violation of the law, and the children have to come with us to a detention center.

But officer, we're just having a slumber party.  Their parents are all aware of this and have given their permission.  It was the reward we had promised them for raising the most in our fundraiser when we...

Mr. Stewart, the parents of the other children are also in violation of the law and they'll be cited along with you and your wife, for a fine of $300 per child.  Do you understand?

    But officer, we...

I'm sorry, Mr. Stewart the curfew is the law.  Now let's have the children get their clothes in order -- they can't come to the center in pajamas.  This is not a game.

Welcome to Baltimore, in the state named after the Mother of God, Maryland.

But Neil, $300?  You've got to be KIDDING.

    I'm sorry;  I made a mistake.  It's not $300, it's 500 smackers.

Officer: Also, your neighbor observed and reported to us that your children were walking over to their friend's house after school without adult supervision. This is a mandatory 1 year in jail and a $1000 fine!

  • These curfew laws are pretty common, it's not just Baltimore.

When I was their age, my friends and I could go almost anywhere in town, usually on our bicycles.  We called it a "bike hike" and we didn't need any permit or passport or "papers" or adult supervision.  I thought that seemed pretty "normal" back then.

Is that the problem, too many things like this are no longer "normal?"

I recall hearing about "curfews" and how oppressive they are, but I never experienced living under one.

Yup...when I was a kid, during summers and on weekends I would go out in the morning and I would be back by dinner. A lot of times I would go back out after dinner until it got dark!

And nothing in the Baltimore curfew ordinance prohibits this.  All it does is prevent kids under 14 from being outside and unaccompanied by an adult after 9:00 p.m.  Kids who are 14, 15, or 16 can be out and unaccompanied until 10:00 p.m. on school nights and 11:00 p.m. on other nights.  Contrary to Neil's fanciful story, it doesn't prohibit slumber parties.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

You're right.  It's a good idea.  So as not to be like lately in Bolivia where
marauding gangs of 14 year old boys go on the prowl all night long, with
military rifles in hand, looking for an exciting target.

In these parts a low-grade imitation is called paint ball.

The fuss is because it shouldn't considered a crime for a 16 year old to be outside their home.  It's a way for many to "enter" the justice system.

  • Laws like this are an attempt for the state to control even more of our lives as part of a statist mentality. The state knows more about what we need than we do. The state will take care of everything, cradle to grave, and will even control what hours your children can be outside.

The state knows laws like this are impossible to enforce, but that doesn't matter as some will be made example of in all this that will accomplish what the state want to do: set the tone for state rule over all lives.

Tell the parents how to raise the child
What the child will eat at breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner
    What the child must read
What the child must be taught about "history" and "science"
    Sex instruction
Tell parents what medical care they must buy
Control what medical treatment is available to old persons - easing them into death
    Film us
    Question us on demand
    Search us
Know where we are going and when
    Tax us into poverty
Arrest those who don't pay taxes
    Judge us prior to trial
    Encourage job removal to overseas
    Control us with government handouts
Enact laws that destroy small business
Encourage low wage jobs that guarantee poverty
Open borders to illegal aliens to destroy society
Turn the military into policemen - trained to kill civilians
Arm police departments with war weaponry
    I could go on......
