This is old news, but wondered what you all thought of this.  When I first heard that Lopez was baptized in the Jordan River, I thought he was re-baptized.  Brought up Catholic, he must have been baptized already, so what was happening here?  Is this even okay to do?

Also, what's with the questions these Catholic priests (?) asked him?  This doesn't sound like a renewal of baptismal promises to me:

Lopez was flanked by two Catholic priests who asked him: “Do you believe in Jesus Christ? Do you believe that He is the Son of God? Do you intend to serve Him all your life?”
And to each question, Lopez responded, “Yes, I do.”

  • I just watched the video, and the priest says he baptizes him "in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit".  Wasn't this a re-baptism then, not a renewal of promises?  And if so, isn't this sacrilege?

Good question. Even the modernist church says you can't "rebaptize".

At the end of the video on twitter he says he just met the two men, and they're Romanian. He seems to assume they were Catholic, but were they?

I'm also not sure what the man said. It sounded to me like past tense "he baptized you..."

    Good question.
I also listened to it again, and what the "priest" says is not clear.  However, in the beginning I believe he says that Mario wishes to be baptized.

  • I could only find one video, that of Mario talking for 1 minute. There was also the link With the explanation of Baptism.

It's a bit of showmanship, I'd say. You don't need to go into water to renew Baptismal vows. So it seems a mockery in a sense, and not for true Catholics.

He said he was raised Catholic so yes, it is a sacrilege to repeat that sacrament. Knowing this, that is not the way to renew baptismal vows. If he wanted to do it, then the way to do that is to actually re-make the same vows that he, or as an infant, his godparents made on his behalf at his baptism, either before a priest or on his own.

  • He probably did some Evangelical thing. Very common among Latinos, who are abandoning the Faith in droves

Normally I would agree with that, but he is very vocal about how proud he to be a Catholic (which I do admire given the business he is in).  Of course, someone needs to clue him in on the fact that the Novus Ordo religion is not the Catholic religion.

I don't think the video of the baptism is in the OP.  Here it is:

  • Huh. Well, in any case, there is zero shock. He's the child of Mexican immigrants.

If you went to your Francophone neighbor to the north for a day trip, you would notice that Quebec and its cities are still very superficially and CULTURALLY Catholic. Buildings have crosses inside, Gothic-designed cathedrals, streets and towns named after Saints or Our Lady and many, many people named "Jean" or "Marie". The reality is that maybe 5% actually care about the Faith, and even less avail of the Sacraments.

This is the same with any country that identifies as Catholic, like Mexico. They do not know their Faith and pass that lack of knowledge on to their children.

Seems very Protestant to me, but I give the guy a lot of credit for going against the Hollywood norm. I pray that he abandons the NO for the True Faith.

Never heard of Mario Lopez, and I am proud to say so. Sounds like some movie star.

Thanks for the link, 2V. After watching it, it is obvious that this is was no renewal of Baptismal vows, but rather a mockery of Baptism, resulting from the ignorance of all involved includind the "priests" and the poor ignoramus star of the show . How many of them know even the basics of the Catholic faith, due to the lack of basic teaching in the last 50 odd years. It is tragic and very sad state of affairs.
