  • I don't necessarily approve of everything this woman is doing, but I must applaud her for the very clever naming of her organization.

Malaysian women launch 'The Obedient Wife Club'
    (AFP) – Jun 2, 2011
KUALA LUMPUR — A group of Malaysian Muslim women say they will fight divorce, domestic violence and other problems -- by appealing to wives to be more obedient, according to one of the organisers.
Maznah Taufik said "The Obedient Wife Club" being launched Saturday is aimed at drawing women who will be taught how to please their husbands better to prevent them from straying or misbehaving.
"We just want to ask all the wives to be obedient wives so that there will be fewer problems in our society," such as infidelity, divorce and domestic violence, she told AFP.
"Obedient wife means they are trying to entertain their husbands, not only taking care of their food and clothes," Maznah said. "They have to obey their husbands. That's the way Islam also asks."
Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country, with some 60 percent of the population practicing the religion, alongside large ethnic Chinese and Indian communities who are mostly Buddhist, Hindu and Christian.
According to local media, the country's divorce rate doubled from 2002 to 2009, with rates higher among Muslims than non-Muslims.
Maznah said it was also the men's responsibility to teach their wives to be obedient.
"Some wives, they just want to get married for leisure but they don't know the responsibility," she said.
"To entertain their husbands is compulsory. If she doesn't do this, the husband will look for another woman... and the house will break down."
Saturday's launch near the capital Kuala Lumpur will include speeches and a show to demonstrate to women how to be good wives, Maznah said, adding that a similar club was set up in Jordan last month.
Maznah is already involved in another controversial venture -- the Ikhwan Polygamy Club, which was launched in 2009 to promote polygamy. Muslim men in Malaysia can take up to four wives.
She is herself in a polygamous marriage, as the second of her husband's two wives.
In 2010, a study by a Muslim activist group found men in polygamous relationships find it difficult to meet the needs of all their wives and children, and that the result is often unhappy and cash-strapped families.

  • Telesphorus,
Personally, I don't want to read about a Muslim woman's desire to be obedient to her polygamous "husband".  This post of yours makes me wonder if you read the whole article because near the bottom it says this woman is her "husband's" 2nd wife!

Oh, yeah, and she's involved in a club encouraging polygamy.

If you really want to post about obedience of wives to their husbands, you'll have to do a bit more searching for something more edifying! A Catholic site is not the place for an article like this.

As I said I don't approve of everything this woman is doing, but her desire to promote obedience to husbands is laudable.  This woman's organization has made several news stories.  Would Christian women start an organization that is overtly like this?  I'm pointing out this woman's zeal, her cleverness in naming the organization, and the fact that it has made international news.

I'm not holding my breath for Catholic women to form an organization promoting obedience to husbands.  Showing support for their husbands in the most non-PC imaginable - politically incorrect it makes international news.

  • No an obedient Catholic girl would just do it and not try and be a leader which is the role of men.

I know many women who are preach this. One is a 19 year old girl, she a very admirable young lady.

Oh really?  They wouldn't try to be leaders?  I doubt that!

I do doubt they would form an organization promoting obedience to husbands.

  • Tele,

Most of the Catholic women that I know are too busy to start this type of group or if they do have time for apostolic work they are doing whatever it is that God has inspired them to do.  I do know that there are some Traditional Catholic women as well as NO Catholic women who have written some good Catholic books on their vocations as Catholic wives and mothers so if you really want to look for some Catholic sources, I'm sure you could find some written by women and of course, there has been plenty of information written by priests and other religious for Catholic women on their vocations.

Now this Muslim woman in the article probably has plenty of time on her hands since she is the 2nd wife of her polygamous husband!!! so I disagree with you that it is laudable for this Muslim woman to be preaching to her polygamous Muslim sisters to be obedient to their so-called "husbands" who have permission to  marry multiple women!  No wonder that the divorce rate went up in their country!  What normal woman would want to play 2nd, 3rd or 4th fiddle to another woman in her home?  That's so repulsive that it just turns my stomach!

Now, if she becomes a Catholic and starts preaching about Catholic principles, by all means let us know.

They seem to make time for such activities.  How hard is it to start such an organization?  Not hard at all.  I'm simply pointing out they wouldn't.

She's teaching the principle that wives should obey husbands.  Should Hagar have not obeyed Abraham?

Hagar's progeny seem to have a better grasp of the principle than today's Christians.

  • Tele,

Why do you even want to defend a polygamous woman's desire to be obedient to a polygamous man who treats her like a plaything by having her play 2nd fiddle to another woman in his house?  I wonder how the 1st wife feels since she's probably home babysitting the 2nd wife's kids so that this 2nd wife can go out and start up her polygamous clubs.

    Your thinking is beyond me.

The Traditional Catholic women that I know are virtuous women and do not need to have an example of a Muslim woman shoved in their faces.  It seems to me that if you had more respect for Catholic womanhood, you would understand that.

Would you post this article if your mother or grandmother were reading this site?

I'm not holding my breath for Catholic women to defend obedience to husbands with the same fervor that this woman does.

  • Every woman I know in the SSPX is obedient and tries to emulate our Lady. Granted if there were women who were not this way they would not speak to me, however I can safely say that there are many women that lead by example. The fact you do not know any is sad, but that is a mark against where you are, not Traditional women as a whole.

  • Having Muslim relatives and also having lived in Saudi Arabia, I can tell you that Muslim women tend to be unhappy in their Muslim marriage. The Muslims who live in a country that is part Christian also are more attracted to Christian men rather than Muslim men because they see that Christian men treat their women better.
