  • Hey guys I make rosaries, so the other day when I saw this the other day I thought why not start making disciplines and cilices, too? Once I figure out how best to make them and get them perfected, I will post pics and offer them for sale, a heck of a lot cheaper than the ones these guys are selling! Does any artist have experience making these and can give me some advice?

  • Hi Theology101- that's awesome that you make Rosary's! I've made a few and its great.

As to the discipline- is this for merely aesthetics and a 'spiritual reminder', if you will, or for actual use? If the latter, I might direct you here:

Order of Taking the Discipline; it was uploaded by Hobbledehoy

Advisory notice: Do not attempt to take up such a practice without the counsel and permission of your spiritual director, and for minors this is expressly forbidden unless you have the consent of both your parents and that of your Father Confessor. This practice can be very injurious to one's physical health, and it can lead to great spiritual delusions and a ruinous pride if it is undertaken under the impulse of self-love and is unaccompanied by other exercises of exterior and, above all, interior mortification. I mean, if you can take the discipline unto the shedding of blood and yet answer rebukes with sharp and bitter words or satiate the palate with all sorts of deliciousness, then there is a serious spiritual malady there.

  • Making Rosaries is a great hobby, making one is almost like praying one. I never sell a rosary- always give them away with blessings. As for the cilice and discipline, I have been thinking about taking up the practice because of some sins I can't seem to stay away from. I haven't talked to a spiritual advisor, though- don't have one. All of the parishes anywhere near me are hardcore NO and I don't go to Mass often. Have never spoken to the priest, though I've been wanting to compliment his incredibly nice Mustang (the car, not the horse ;).
