  • Commentary on the Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

In today's Gospel reading, we see that everyone involved is a crook. The steward, those in debt, even the master... everyone's rotten.

And as Father pointed out in his sermon, they all wanted to make up the rules as they went along. And again as Father pointed out, that's essentially what Original Sin is - we make up the rules... we are God.

That got me thinking about the changes in the Church the past few decades.

The Latin word caritas translates into love (or charity, depending on the context). And that is where many, if not most, within the Church have lost their way in the past 40 years.

"Love thy neighbor as thyself" is what we were all raised with. Call me old-fashioned, but I certainly expect my neighbor to treat ME the way I would treat him. Isn't that was real love and charity is?

  • Today His Excellency mixed the parable of the crooked steward in with the charity of St. Camillus.  He told of the way in which Warren Buffet (sp) started out with a lemonade stand and worked his way up to billionaire (worldly wise better at it than us spirituals).

He pointed out that we shouldn't wait, because we won't know when we will have to give an account of our stewardship.  And our stewardship would be about the ways/times we served Jesus by our service to the least of His brothers.  He asked a question,  "Why were the saints always picking up and taking care of the destitute?"  Because they knew that charity was the greatest virtue.
