Lost soul....

  • A neighbor of mine messaged me, and a number of his friends this “quote”, by email, and said this is how he views his life.  “We live in a secular society where the underlying assumption is, that we are naked apes, on a rock, hurtling through space. There is no reason for our existence, no meaning to our lives, and we all enter and leave a cruel and callous world which cares not one jot about us”.
Any thoughts or anything I can reach out to him with?   I’m at a loss.

  • The law of causation proves there must be an unmoved mover:

From that basis, faith can be recovered.

  • True, you could also ask him if he believes in Evil. If he says yes then he is trapped because if there is evil there must be good and if there is good there must be an ultimate good.

He seems to just be a garden variety nihilist. Probably was influenced by friends to think this way and hasn't really thought much for himself. I don't think he's a lost soul yet!

Notice he says the underlying assumption is x rather than just saying that x is the case. This suggests that he's not happy with that idea, that we're just naked apes and life has no meaning. It sounds like he's looking for faith. A good opportunity for evangelisation IMO. Perhaps just send him a message sharing your own contrasting worldview based on Catholic teaching, and maybe he'll be interested and you can go from there.

  • Thank you.  The sense of utter dejection and hopelessness is very profound in my interactions with my friend...I’ve never encountered such a devastatingly rejected person/soul.  I feel so much pity for him and HUGE concern for his physical well-being - against his own hand.

Yes that would be a good starting point for an atheist and it sounds like this guy is one.  But maybe he believes in God already but he is one of those “non-religious” people?  If so, you could go straight to suggesting that he investigate claims that God has revealed Himself.  And explain why you think he should start with investigating the claims of the Catholic Church.  Explain why it is reasonable to believe that what the Church teaches is true.  I think that catechism TAN published “This is the Faith” is a good start.

Tell him that there are some people left who are not that hopeless. Not all society believes in such hopeless BS. Also, we're dressed.
Men are not bound, or able to read hearts; but when they see that someone is a heretic by his external works, they judge him to be a heretic pure and simple ... Jerome points this out. (St. Robert Bellarmine)

  • Suggestion:

This world was created by God as a test.

Tell him it's the intentional design of the devil and his minions to mislead humans into despair to fail the test, hoping their souls
    will join them in Hell.

He should come to realize, he's been given many graces and gifts from God to pass the test and not reject them.

But take advantage of this limited opportunity to save his soul and be with God for eternity of Heaven.
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

  • You do not say if he is a Catholic.  If he is not then spend time with him on a regular basis and go through the simple Baltimore Catechism PRAYERFULLY.  He needs diversion and a human voice to quieten what is going on in his mind.  And he needs it regularly.

If he is Catholic do the same so that he can get back on course and re-learn that God is in charge.  Also check out what he is reading and provide
material that enables him to get off the spinning roundabout he has voluntarily mounted in the first place.   This is not to judge him as so many Catholics
do not realise they begin to dialogue with the devil the minute they give any credence to anything against which the Church has taught prior to Vat. II - such as the evolutionary theory and others.
"In His wisdom," says St. Gregory, "almighty God preferred rather to bring good out of evil than never allow evil to occur."

Heliocentrism and Darwinism are false teachings of "scientific materialism", which is an old euphemism for Marxism. For example, so called "gravity", as "gravitation" in the Newtonian sense, is no lateral force, yet the Moon goes laterally around the Earth. It must not be "gravity" then that directs the Moon around the Earth, and it could not have gotten there by accident either. Newtonian gravitation implies an accident, and for such occasional accidents to be correct too many other things have to be wrong; but cause and effect as we see in the orbit of the Moon is within an order of cause and effect that is not accidental. The almanacs prove that.
The proper sense and respect for cause and effect that people should have by nature has been poisoned by "scientific materialism" and bad philosophy. Some call it brainwashing. He could be suffering from brainwashing and with the wrong kind of soap. "Don't let the commies get you down", Archie Bunker could say as he may be watching from Heaven. He should take some time to learn the classical point of view from Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and the Apostles, and Duns Scotus, et cetera.
Many small things are not so accidental as many people imagine and neither are the more important ones. Socrates defined justice as that which penetrates all things, so justice will even make sense of accidents, which makes them less accidental. The cosmos is no accident.

What is your friend's religious background?

"Within almost any educational system in the civilized world, children, at an early age (usually grades 4-5), are taught that all physical things in the universe are reducible to atoms, and their actions equally reducible to the interplay of these atomic realities. This produces a state of mind, heart, and spirit in our children which, at least implicitly, is a denial of the reality and goodness of God’s creation. They now learn that what is experienced as substantial to them with their senses and minds, is merely an illusional, or a semi-illusional effect of the interplay of atomic realities upon one another and their senses. And since these atoms are constantly subject to change, there is no permanent “nature” to anything. In other words, such children have become epistemological schizophrenics – living in, believing in, and loving a world which is fundamentally a chimera. In such a world, all absoluteness in regard to either Truth or Morality is destroyed."

  • I don't recommend arguing. I recommend living the holiness that God is calling you to live. This is what brings people to the true Faith.
