We rent a three bedroom house for $150 a month.

    WOW!   THAT'S CHEAP!

Even I can afford that!  Hm, any open homes down there?  =P

  • You could buy this one along with three other lots for $8 K or a little less.  There is a two story kind of Victorian a block away for $14 K, and a small house across the street for sale, but I don't know how much.  Most of the factory jobs start at $6 or 7 with 50 cent and $1 raises every so often.  My husband celebrates his first year anniversary at this job next week and he is up to $10.  We spend a bit under $200 for utilities max, but that doesn't include phone and net ($75).  There are probably other rentals open here, but I'm not aware of them.

Now if you move to one of the larger towns where the factories are (about 8 miles away) you will pay $250-350 for rent.  It costs us between $15 and $40 per week for gas to go to work depending on whether Paul takes the minivan or the Verago.  Once every week or two we drive 20 miles to do our shopping---much cheaper there.

  • I don't have any immediate plans to move, but I'll keep it in mind for the future.  Thanks!

  • If Killeen isn't the cheapest...

Anyone know where I can buy or rent housing for cheaper than that?

  • I believe he did explain why he used Texians, but now I can't remember for sure why.  There was a rather long period of time there when that area we now call Texas didn't know what it was.  It took a bit of "becoming" for them.  I suppose "Neu" was the original spelling.  The Allerkamps of Fredricksburg were the best characters in that book---the most likable.  But the Germans were treacherously dealt with in the pre cινιℓ ωαr time.  Unless that is totally fictitious, which I doubt, they were treated with typical Texan savagery, i.e. slaughtered on suspicion.
