  • I'm loathe to draw attention to this small part of the CathInfo experience, and goodness knows I'm up here in public, so please feel free to have at me.

I'm just mildly curious as to what causes downward seepage of these figures.
It seems like I had maybe 4 times both figures at one time and just recently I think both figures were cut in half.  In 500 posts I'm sure I've gotten  patted or chomped a lot more than 15 times.  I'm not complaining, just a bit of curiosity.

Senile dementia on my part may be causing hallucinations.

I trim the databases from time to time, so they don't get too big. The bigger the databases get, the slower the site could become.

There are still 11,000 likes/dislikes in the database. I got rid of about 8,000 of them (the 8,000 oldest ones). They collect quite quickly on an active forum like CathInfo.

I do the same thing to the PM database, the Votes database, and a couple others.

It only takes a few minutes to write up the few SQL statements "DELETE FROM database_name WHERE like_id < X", etc. but it's well worth it, since I can keep my hosting costs down. I don't like to pass the hat. Money is tight these days, for everyone. Better to be frugal than to be one more "organization that wants your money".

So you could save a lot of money if you got rid of them altogether?

    Here, here!

It is good to have a place to come and learn the faith. I think between you, parentsfortruth and hobbledehoy I may just end up a fair catholic!

Indeed. Glad to know I wasn't the only one thinking that.

...it seemed that since the "like" votes consume database, and what I
'like' about this post is that the site owner is being frugal by throwing
out 'old likes' to save money,  it seemed self-contradictory to 'like' this
    post.

Is that ironic or what??   :laugh2:

Okay, I think I get it now.

When you say you "trim likes" you're only talking about
the votes on the various threads.  When a like or a dislike
is voted, the tally is kept for the individual member being
voted on in his post, and that vote becomes part of his own
personal reputation, which is not ever "trimmed" when the
    likes are trimmed.

    Correct?

Therefore, presuming that's the case, I'm okay now with
liking the post above because when you "trim likes" only
that vote will be wiped out, but you will still have my little
upthumb in your personal reputation, Matthew.  So then
on that basis, I'm going to go ahead and like the post
    after all!

When I did that just now, Matthew's rep went from 10686
up to 10687.  Isn't that great?

The story comes full circle!!   :cowboy:

Matthew, soulguard, PFT and Hobbles are each a major part of what
makes CI a good place to be, that is, for me anyway.  And Mama
    ChaCha ain't too shabby neither!
