  • I was told that most peasant women were not virgins when they were married because the man had to make sure that the woman was fertile to provide insurance for old age

    Also that there were convents just for the daughters of impoverished aristocrats who could not provide dowries, and the nuns had servants.

    Is this just protestant propaganda?

    I wouldn't believe anything written by social historians of that era unless you can examine their sources yourself.

  • I think you have a point.

    We were taught all sorts of rubbish about the corruption and decay of the Church which led to popular enthusiasm for the "Reformation" in England.

    That has been nicely debunked by Eamon Duffy.
